IKEA is giving Australians the chance to personalise its iconic FRAKTA bag for the first time ever

Range news10 September 2026
For three days only, customers can add their initials to IKEA's famous blue FRAKTA bag during IKEA Open House, a nationwide celebration of smart storage and organisation, 18–21 September

Instantly recognisable, IKEA's bright blue FRAKTA bag is one of the world's most iconic shopping bags. In fact, one in three Australians admit to owning one, while more than 680,000 FRAKTA bags were sold across the country in the last financial year alone.

From 18-21 September, IKEA Open House will take over every IKEA store across Australia and New Zealand, offereing four days of inspiration, expert advice, special offers, family-friendly activities and interactive experiences designed to help people get organised and make more room for the things they love.

As part of IKEA Open House, IKEA is giving customers the rare opportunity to put their own stamp on a cult favourite, with free FRAKTA personalisation available across 18–20 September. For the first time in Australia and New Zealand, customers can personalise their own FRAKTA bag with custom initials, transforming the everyday storage hero into a limited-edition keepsake.

Unsung storage heroes
Australians are getting creative when it comes to making room for the things they love. IKEA research shows more than four in 10 (44%) use packaging boxes for storage, 35% store items in suitcases, 28% rely on shopping bags and 10% admit they've even used their oven as extra storage space. Compared to some of the places Australians are keeping their belongings, the iconic blue FRAKTA bag is beginning to look like one of the more sensible options.

How FRAKTA personalisation works:

Step 1: Customers can purchase a FRAKTA bag at the regular retail price of $1.75 AUD through checkout before heading to the dedicated FRAKTA Personalisation Station, following signs and directions from helpful IKEA co-workers.

Step 2: There, customers can choose up to two initials, which will be professionally heat-pressed onto their bag in trademark IKEA yellow felt. Personalisation is completely free, with each customer also receiving an authentication certificate commemorating their limited-edition personalised FRAKTA.

To ensure as many customers as possible have the chance to participate, personalisation is limited to one bag per customer. Approximately 900 personalised FRAKTA bags will be available per store, per day.

Designed more than three decades ago, FRAKTA, which means "to freight" in Swedish, has become one of IKEA's most enduring products, used by customers around the world to store, carry and organise everyday essentials, even evolving into influencing the fashion world with high-end designer copycats and embraced by streetwear culture. Crafted from high-quality materials it has been kept and reused for years.

Following the success of IKEA’s Hus of FRAKTA pop-up on Oxford Street, London last year where crowds lined up to secure a personalised version of the bag, the experience is now arriving in Australia and New Zealand for the very first time.

Ainslie Woodham, Head of Home Furnishing & Retail Design, IKEA Australia & New Zealand, said: "FRAKTA has become much more than a shopping bag. It's low in price, incredibly durable and long-lasting and used in countless ways throughout people’s lives, which is why so many customers all over the world have such a love for it. It feels right to kick off our focus on storage and organisation with the one product that is the original and ultimate storage hero in the IKEA range – the humble FRAKTA.

"Our Store & Organise research shows Australians want to make room for the things they love. Personalising FRAKTA is a fun way to celebrate that, while giving customers the chance to put their own stamp on a much-loved IKEA product.

"After seeing the excitement it generated in London, we're thrilled to bring the experience to every IKEA store in Australia and New Zealand for the first time. We’re inviting everyone to visit their local IKEA store for IKEA Open House weekend in September, join in the fun and have the chance to get your hands on this limited-edition item too."

IKEA Open House

FRAKTA personalisation forms part of IKEA Open House, four days of celebrations taking place in every IKEA store across Australia and New Zealand across 18–21 September, designed to help people make simple changes that create more room for the things they love.

Throughout the weekend, customers can discover affordable storage and organisation solutions, gain practical inspiration for every room of the home, unlock exclusive offers and enjoy a packed calendar of family-friendly activities.  Selected stores will host a range of interactive workshops and experiences focused on helping Australians organise the things they love. These include BESTÅ storage workshops, where customers can learn how to customise storage solutions for different spaces around the home and TROFAST challenges that make organisation fun for the whole family.

There will be food tastings, where customers will have the opportunity to sample delicious products from the IKEA food range, including the famous IKEA meatballs and plant-based balls and cinnamon buns.

Customers can also get creative with Paint & Sip sessions, while spinning wheels, giveaways and activities throughout the stores will provide plenty of opportunities for visitors to be inspired, entertained and rewarded.

Visitors across all stores can take part in treasure hunts that encourage families to explore every corner of the store, meet IKEA mascots, namely the iconic FABLA Bear, and enter colouring competitions. IKEA Family members will also be able to take advantage of special Family Fridays offer where customers can buy selected meals for just $5. The offer is designed to bring people together around the table.

Whether you're looking to reclaim a cluttered kitchen bench, better organise a growing collection of treasured keepsakes or finally find a home for those drawers full of cables and chargers, IKEA Open House is designed to show customers how small changes can make a big difference at home.
