IKEA unveils SOLUPPGÅNG, a new outdoor collection designed to make everyday adventures simple, spontaneous and affordable for the many. Drawing inspiration from Nordic friluftsliv – the philosophy of open‑air living – and Japanese komorebi, the poetic fleeting beauty of sunlight filtering through leaves, SOLUPPGÅNG invites people to enjoy small, meaningful moments in nature —whether it’s a park visit, a one-day trip to the beach or mountains, or enjoying outdoor cooking with friends and family.

The SOLUPPGÅNG collection brings together a thoughtfully curated selection of items. Highlights include a foldable stool and table — both easy to pack, carry and use at home or on the go. Tableware made from durable enamelled steel offers a lightweight yet long‑lasting solution suitable for outdoor meals or everyday dining. For simple grilling moments, a compact cast-iron barbecue provides reliable heat and ease of use. Each piece is designed to be long‑lasting and to transition effortlessly between outdoor adventures and life at home.

Food preparation tools such as bamboo chopping boards and serving bowls emphasise both practicality and natural beauty. A specially designed cool box combines natural materials with smart functionality, offering dependable insulation and a crafted expression that feels equally at home on a picnic or in the kitchen. A portable LED lantern provides warm, inviting light wherever it’s needed, while textiles — from throws to cushions — embrace softness, tactile comfort and craftsmanship inspired by nature. The versatile bag, with its expandable top and durable base, offers practical space for essentials while remaining understated and functional.

“We want to inspire people to go outside in an easy way — even in small, everyday ways,” says Karin Gustavsson, Creative Leader for SOLUPPGÅNG. “Nature shouldn’t require special equipment or long travel. SOLUPPGÅNG is designed to enable simple enjoyment: a seat in the grass, a warm drink, a shared meal, or a breath of fresh air.”

Designed by those who know the outdoors by heart

Designer Ola Wihlborg, who created many of the cooking and eating pieces in the collection, rooted his work in years of hands‑on outdoor experience — from mountain biking to spending extended time in the woods. This practical knowledge shaped the intuitive functionality of each item.

“When I designed the knife, spork, barbecue and tableware, I wanted them to work effortlessly outdoors but also feel natural at home,” he says. “Durable materials like cast-iron and enamelled steel make the products long‑lasting, while natural details give them a warm, tactile feel.”

The collection’s design language is minimalist yet warm, using simple forms softened with human‑centred expression to avoid feeling rigid or impersonal. Durability plays a central role, favouring materials that develop experience and preserve memories over time. “We prioritised quality above all else,” Ola explains. “It’s better to have something that lasts longer and becomes more personal along the way.”

The knife — sometimes perceived as unexpected — is one of Ola’s favourite pieces and reflects his belief that a versatile tool is essential outdoors. “It’s something I always carry,” he says. “Sometimes you need to cut rope, sometimes you prepare food. It’s just practical.”

Above all, he designed SOLUPPGÅNG for “not‑so‑wild adventures” — simple outdoor experiences that don’t require planning or special expertise. “Just go out,” he says. “Don’t wait. You can be outside in a minute.”

SOLUPPGÅNG blends Scandinavian and Japanese perspectives on connecting with nature, uniting the simplicity of friluftsliv with the poetic sensibilities of komorebi. While friluftsliv highlights an uncomplicated, everyday approach to being outdoors, komorebi captures the delicate, fleeting beauty of sunlight filtering through leaves. Together, these influences shape a collection that balances minimalism, warmth and functionality — a distinctly IKEA expression.

Designed to accompany life wherever it goes, SOLUPPGÅNG encourages all kinds of connections with the outdoors — from 5‑minute pauses outside the doorstep to slow forest bathing, a simple grilling moment in the park or even an outdoor tea ceremony.

Affordability remains central, ensuring more people can enjoy nature without barriers. “We want to be the enabler that still lets you explore,” says Karin Gustavsson. “A quick escape into nature should be for everyone.”

More than an outdoor collection, SOLUPPGÅNG is an invitation to slow down, rediscover nature and create moments that matter.

The limited edition SOLUPPGÅNG collection will be available in-store and online across IKEA Australia from 1 April 2026.
