Toppling Furniture

Corporate news12 May 2025
In line with new Australian requirements, IKEA Australia has introduced fixed safety labelling to products that present a toppling risk

At IKEA, safety is always at the heart of what we do. We believe creating a better everyday life at home for Australians means making homes safer. To ensure safety, we conduct over a million product tests each year at our three IKEA Test Lab facilities.

We know that furniture that can topple, or fall over, can be a risk in the home, causing injury or even death, especially for children.

From 4 May 2025, in line with new Australian requirements, IKEA Australia has introduced fixed safety labelling to products that present a toppling risk. This includes many everyday products sold at IKEA such as bookcases, chests of drawers, wardrobes, and TV cabinets.

IKEA Australia welcomes the introduction of these new furniture safety standards and the goal of eliminating the risk of injury and death from toppling furniture.

As the largest retailer of these kinds of products in Australia, we want to take the opportunity to engage millions of Australians with this vital message and use our daily interactions with customers to do all that we can to help prevent these household accidents.

Permanent, visible labels are now attached to our products. We are educating our customers both in store and online on the risks of toppling furniture and how to properly secure their item to a wall. We are training IKEA co-workers on toppling safety risks and how to talk to customers about this topic in a positive way which encourages them to make their home safer for their family. Toppling furniture warnings will be prominent in our signage and other communications in-store, online and in our instruction manuals.

Together, we can eliminate the risks of toppling furniture in Australian homes.
