IKEA will buy back its customers furniture at double the value this Black Friday.

November 2020- This Black Friday, IKEA Australia is offering to buy back customers old furniture at double the normal rate in return for a voucher. What’s more, during the #BuyBackFriday campaign between 24 November and 3 December, IKEA will be reaming each returned item with the name of its previous owner.

Rather than re-selling the furniture with the traditional Nordic name, each item will be renamed and labeled with the name of its previous owner. The BILLY bookcase could now become the BRAD and the iconic KALLAX temporarily transformed into the KATHY. The returned and renamed furniture will be sold at a discounted rate in the store’s As-Is area – an all-year-round sales location for IKEA.The Best Kept Secret at IKEA – The As-Is AreaThe As-Is area is an ideal place to find an item at a reduced price. On average, a Buy Back item placed in As-Is will be sold within 24 hours.

In addition to pre-loved furniture that has been returned through the Buy Back service, the section also includes returned, damaged and discontinued items, or furniture that was previously on display. In our last financial year, 720,000 products were sold through the As-Is area, an average of 13,800 a week across 10 stores – that's 720,000 products that were given a second life and potentially diverted from landfill.

Ryan Burman, Commercial Activity Leader says, “Customers are at the heart of our business and we want to celebrate them this Black Friday. Not only do we want to incentivise customers to responsibly get rid of their old IKEA purchases, we want to celebrate the life of that piece of furniture by temporarily renaming it for sale. Adding the name of the previous owner gives the next owner a glimpse into its previous life, as it makes its way into the home of its new owner.“Giving furniture a second, third or even fourth life through this initiative provides more Australians with affordable and sustainable solutions for their home, and ultimately helps divert it from landfill.

The IKEA Buy Back Service is part of the IKEA journey to becoming 100% circular in all its operations by 2030.”

#BuyBackFriday - How it works:

  • The IKEA furniture Buy Back service incentivises customers to upcycle old IKEA goods instead of throwing them away.
  • Customers can find out the Buy Back value of their piece of furniture by visiting ikea.com.au/buyback and following the steps online.
  • During the activation period, IKEA Family members who generate a Buy Back quote will get double the value back compared to the normal Buy Back price of the products.
  • This value will be issued on a refund card to be used again at IKEA.The online tool will calculate the double refund automatically for the IKEA Family member during the promotion period during the promotion period, 24 Nov–3 Dec.
  • IKEA Family members have from 24 November until December 31 to bring back their furniture to redeem the quote they received during the promotional period in a refund card.Non-IKEA Family customers will get the same amount of the Buy Back price and service is as usual.
  • The IKEA product needs to be complete and unmodified, returned clean and fully assembled. The furniture will then be resold to a new home via the As-Is department
