Similar to Corelle , seemsSusanSimilar to Corelle , seems durable for a bustling family at an excellent value. Contemporary look to add to my other china5
Very classy, but....CarmenThe plates are beautiful, glossy and appear they will ware well. One plate was chipped - be careful of the edges, they are glass - and since you cannot return one plate, I had to buy another 4 pack. I also bought the small bowls and had to order the salad plates as not in store. It's been a month and I still had no salad plates. NOT happy. Ikea blames FedEX, FedEx states never received plates. Not one Ikea rep can solve this. I just reordered myself - we'll see what happens. I recommend you purchase in store - their delivery is horrible.3
Packing of plates is terrible.DianePacking of plates is terrible. Received some that were broken. The quality and look of the plates is recycled glass and looks beautiful though.3

Love these platesJaniceI have these plates in white, got the black to expand the set. Certain foods look awesome on black plates, makes the food pop in presentation. I love IKEA for...just about everything :)5
Chic tablewareMichelleGlossy black, very chic, modern tableware.5
Shipped perfectlyChunI purchased these online in May and they were shipped with extra care, which all plates were in perfect shape. These are glass plates so they are shinier than china, with a luxurious look. Functionally, they are lighter than china and also insulate better when heating food in the microwave. The food gets well heated but the plates are not as hot as china. They have held up very well, and at these prices, they are a steal. Highly, highly, highly recommend these.5
Glass shards/pieces on platesVerified BuyerWent to local Ikea to purchase a whole new set of dishes, was looking for this set made of glass (has to be purchased in separates) bowls, plates, side plates, etc. Had everything in the cart for purchase, but when I went to get larger plates, I noticed that that the stacked plates had very small glass shards/pieces between each plate. Immediately returned the entire pending purchase back to the shelf. Do not want to eat glass1
Not sure the edges are sturdy - chipped on openingCharronI love the look of these and will consider buying more but when I got the pack of 4 home two of the plates had chipped edges. This is the only reason my rating is neutral. Recommend checking the edges thoroughly by feel when selecting given they are now bundled in packs of 4 (I believe previously you could buy singles). I did not do this check so therefore cannot say whether it happened in transit to my house. Aside from that they are lovely. I would have to assume they are not rated to be hard to break unlike some other glass brands.3

Setting the table with leftovers

Dark and dramatic BACKIG tableware has a surprising past – it's 94% glass made from factory scraps. That means leftovers from glass production are melted down and reused to create BACKIG. "Using materials which have less impact on the environment, like recycled materials, is something that we strive for. It’s in our DNA.” says Silke Millan who works with sustainability at the IKEA headquarters.

In a small French town, less than an hour's drive from the ocean, a large factory is ablaze on the inside. Furnaces fire at volcanic temperatures and conveyor belts whirl with glowing red globs, turning out dozens of different IKEA glass products.

Creating new products from scraps

"In glass production, you always get a certain amount of scrap." says Daniel Stjernqvist, an IKEA engineer who's specialised in glass for many years. "Sometimes, material is cut off to create a finished product, and sometimes it breaks or has something wrong with it – like a bubble or a defect – so it's rejected. This is then crushed and goes back into the furnace again to melt.” explains Daniel.

Affordable and energy-saving

Clear glass can be reused to make clear glass, but the dusky, deep purple tint of BACKIG is characteristic of when different colored glass is melted together and reused to make something new. The result is so dark it's nearly black, which is why it's often called "black glass". "Black glass is an affordable alternative to black stoneware since it's less expensive to produce. For us it makes sense to use a material that already exists – it's safe, saves energy and money – so why not do something good with it," says Daniel.

What is glass?

Glass is mainly made of sand, soda, and lime melted at a high temperature. Tempering or various additives gives you extra-strong and impact-resistant glass that in some cases can be taken straight from freezer to oven without cracking. A big benefit is how glass can be recycled over and over without the quality deteriorating. Also, a lot less energy is needed to melt recycled glass compared to new raw materials. Our goal is to eventually use only recycled glass in our range.
