Ratings and reviews

Looks beautiful!GauthierThis gets a lot of compliments in our home! It looks great and works wonderfully. Assembly was easy except for the drawer. Not sure if something was off but we really struggled, even for two ikea pros. The drawer still feels a bit strange compared to other products, I think because of the soft close mechanism4
Stylish pieceAnaI love this piece. It works perfectly as storage and display for our cocktail materials.5
Cautious, may not assembly wellKirstenI was super excited to get my island and get it put together. Disappointment and frustration is how it ended. Not sure which piece was twisted, but it impeded the entire assembly and even affected the pre-assembled shelves (separated the slats from the rails and now the dowels are visible on some slat ends). I had to shave down some dowels to get them to go in the pre-drilled holes and also used a mallet to get the gaps to close. Then to cap it off when I installed the towel rack, the bar is a hair too short, the screw wont catch. So now I have to drilled holes on the side of the island. I have assembled more Ikea furniture than I'd like to admit over 25 years and never have I experienced anything quite as awful as this island. Not sure where I will go from here, it was very pricey and does not look as nice as it should.3
Useful island TaraThe shelving is nice but would have preferred that it be covered in - either by cabinets or drawers. Otherwise, it’s a nice island - no seating but helps with counter space! 4
Sturdy kitchen islandMarthaThis island is a sturdy well-built piece of furniture that we used to attached and prolong our kitchen counter. The height adjusted to the counter and fit perfectly in our kitchen. We like the drawer size and bought extra baskets at IKEA to contain our appliances . I recommend this piece.5
Great product - installation has issuesGaneshWe bought this and assembled. The middle trays do not sit flush with the sides. The middle horizontal support for the trays are supported by the side walls using dowels and the dowels do not go inside fully, they are a little bigger than the holes provided.3
Awesome piece for the kitchen.RossAwesome piece for the kitchen. Very well built with absolutely no complaints. Great extra counter top space for the smaller kitchen.5
I liked its structure andLiliaI liked its structure and it is strong, my kitchen is small and it was perfect5
Laundry room tableLailaI bought this to fit into a small laundry room where space was tight. The drawer and shelves alleviated my storage issues in this room. Very sturdy and nice finish on the wood.5

I like the storage space.GeorgiaI like the storage space.5
The perfect addition to my kitchen!Anonymous reviewerI already own the larger island, and I was looking for an additional Counter space that would blend in with my kitchen, and I purchased this to match. I love it. Sturdy, lots of additional shelf space, and a perfect sized hidden drawer, that is perfect for keeping my sharp knives and tools it. I do not cut directly on the faux woodblock top, and instead I use a bamboo cutting surface that I also bought at IKEA, that works perfectly for when I am butchering large chunks of meats and doing mise en place, for my cooking. I definitely recommend this item for anyone's kitchen looking for additional counter and storage space.5
It’s A great product itClaytonIt’s A great product it looks very nice Bill well I highly recommend it5
Perfect island worksurface for my kitchenElizabethVery straightforward to put together myself but I needed help to lift the top into place .... it’s heavy!!5
Kitchen counter extensionAnonymousVery solid lined up perfect with kitchen counter5
Very useful, but beware, not a real butcher blockAnonymousThe product work as intended and is well designed but for the top. Although it looks like a heavy duty butcher block, it isn't one. It only has a top layer of oak of may be a quarter of an inch at most. Most likely, it is filled with particle board or other low quality material. Therefore, it is quite noise to cut vegetables on this board. For this reason, I feel the price of this product should be lower.3
Kitchen IslandAnonymousAbsolutely love it. It is solid & sturdy and looks great. 100% happy with it :-D5
Kitchen IslandAnonymousWe bought this as we needed more counter space in our kitchen. We are in love! We use it for everything and the shelves are great for small appliances!5

Better countertops with fewer trees

At IKEA we have a tradition of trying to utilize materials in the best possible way. For our countertops in thick veneer it means that we combine old craftsmanship with modern manufacturing methods. It makes the countertops easier to install, more stable and more resistant to humidity compared to solid countertops. And since we use the whole tree – even the crooked branches and the small twigs – we can save natural resources too.

Better countertops by using wood smartly

Wood is a precious natural resource. Even though it’s a renewable material it needs to be handled responsibly. One way to do it, is to use the wood more efficiently. That’s what we do with our kitchen countertops in thick wood veneer.

“At IKEA we have a tradition of trying to utilize the materials we have in the best possible way,” says Johnny Rietz, who’s been involved in developing the kitchen countertops in thick veneer. The work started in 2008 when IKEA founder, Ingvar Kamprad, visited one of our suppliers and asked a simple question that took some time to answer: ‘How can we make this product using fewer trees?’

Less is more

“After some trials and errors, we came up with the solution. A core of particleboard and a layer of solid wood on the outside – or thick veneer,” says Johnny. “It’s a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern manufacturing methods. Paper-thin veneer has been used in fine, decorative furniture making for centuries, but for our countertops we’re using a much thicker layer of wood.” The thick veneer makes the surface hardwearing, and it saves raw material – a lot of it. From the same amount of wood needed to make one solid countertop, it’s possible to produce five thick veneer countertops.

No wood is wasted

Another advantage with this production technique is that you can use the whole tree; the stem as surface, and scrap bits – curvy, bent branches and small twigs – for the particleboard on the inside. The end result is a countertop that is every bit as genuine as solid wood, only more stable and more resistant to humidity. “Sometimes a small, harmless question can make a big difference. That’s exactly what happened with our kitchen countertops. It started as a challenge to use resources wiser, and proved to have positive effects not only for the environment, but also the quality. I think it’s great when that happens!” says Johnny.

Material

What is constructed board?

We use constructed boards when manufacturing many of our pieces of furniture, such as tables and wardrobes. They are light yet still stable and strong. Each board has a frame made of chipboard, fibreboard or solid wood, while the inside is a honeycomb filling structure made of mostly recycled paper, which is extra durable thanks to its special construction. The board is then covered with a protective paint, foil or veneer depending on the style wanted.
