Uncomfortable to sit in but after some minor work, it’s a great chairXinliAs many people mentioned, the material used makes this chair pretty but very uncomfortable to sit in. The arm rest is very uneven and easily scratches skin. I decided to wrap yarn around which worked great! I also placed a cushion on top.

I've draped fake sheep skin and put a 20x20 cushion with the chair and it looks and feels great. You'll need to drape something over it as the rattan is so rough and splintery everywhere. I'm so worried someone will snag their clothes on it.

Rattan is a living material with a will of its own. That’s why we work together with experienced weavers who shape the rattan vines to functional products. The cooperation means you can have handmade furniture in your own home - created by man and nature together.
Rattan is a fast-growing palm tree that needs to be boiled and sun-dried before it can be tamed into different shapes that we can sit on, rest in, or decorate our homes with. This is where the professional weavers come in. “We wouldn’t be able to make authentic rattan products without them. They have skills that can’t be copied by machines”, says Andreas Fredriksson, who has designed some of our rattan furniture together with the artisans.

If rattan is treated right it can be transformed into almost anything, even furniture with generous forms that can fit in a flat pack. But the design is not only up to the designer and the artisan. “You have to cooperate with Mother Nature and come up with some new solutions as well – but the reward when you get everything to harmonize makes it worthwhile”, finishes Andreas.

What is rattan?
Rattan is a climbing plant belonging to the palm tree family. It grows as a vine on tree trunks, its fast-growing tendrils easily reaching 60, and sometimes more than 300, feet long. They can be harvested without harming the host trees and grow back quickly once harvested. We use this lightweight, flexible and durable material in products like armchairs, rocking chairs, side tables, outdoor furniture and for handmade baskets.
