Four chairs replaced for Cracking down the middleChrisThis is now the fourth Tobias chair I've had to deal with, all with the same defect: a crack right down the middle. Last night, I returned the third broken one. This morning, I drove all the way to the Vaughan, Ontario store the only location with stock to try again.
I got the new chair home, unwrapped it, and unbelievably, it was already cracked straight down the middle, before I even sat on it. That’s beyond frustrating, It's clear that this is not a fluke — it's a design or manufacturing flaw that IKEA has failed to fix.
An IKEA phone rep told me the issue was supposedly resolved by the supplier in 2017. That is clearly false. This chair is still being sold with a known structural problem, and customers are wasting time and money trying to get one that isn’t defective. IKEA needs to immediately pull this product from their shelves until the issue is actually addressed. It is unacceptable to keep selling a chair that so consistently breaks, sometimes before it's even used.
Flawed DesignMatthewDo not buy these chairs. Repeated flexing of the seat at the front, that would be the part behind your knees, will fatigue and crack. Out of 8 chairs that we purchased 6 have failed. The entire seat portion will be split down the middle. By the time they break it is outside the warranty period and you are out of hundreds of dollars in chairs that should last. Ikea won't help. Claim this is the first they are hearing about this despite all the negative reviews. Several people have been bitten in the back of the leg by our Ikea Tobias chairs.
These broke after using for less than 2 years LoriWe bought 4 chairs in June 2023 and two of them have broke already. They have large cracks right down the middle of the seat. They look great but not worth it as they are clearly faulty.

I love the Tobias Chair. EveIt is chic and comfortable. I'm just sorry that my older Tobias chair seat cracked the same day the new one arrived. No idea how. My younger daughter who weighs 120 lbs sat down and we heard the crack. Is there any way to fix it?
Almost all 6 crackedRachaelWhile we did get a year or two out of these chairs, each of the except for one has cracked down the middle of the seat. Three times the crack happened when someone was sitting on it.
Prone to breakingDmitryWe've had to replace one of four Tobias chairs purchased 2 years after purchasing because my 8-year old was rocking on it and it broke. A few months later the same thing happened and another chair broke for the same reason. There is a deep crack in the middle of the seat and it's no longer useable. The child is average weight - and although they are not meant to be rocked on, you can't prevent that when you have small children around. These chairs look nice but are not foolproof.

They're 👌 RukiaThese chairs are the best! They're very easy to maintaining and kids can never fall plus they're very beautiful and match with all my furniture choices. I've had the clear ones for last 5yrs. I just bought the different colors for a change. They're perfect 👌
Not good chair!SarahSo my family purchased 4 chairs, and within 2 and a half years, they start to crack at the seat and can pull at clothes and leave injuries. I was not pleased with this kind of quality. IN the end I had to toss 2 chairs out.
Stylish, but not durable. Not like the old ones ...RobinWe purchased 4 of these chairs two years ago (summer 2022). 2 of the 4 have cracked along the seat base making them useless. My partner has 2 of the older Tobias models (2010?) at his work that are still going strong. Friends of ours have several of the older model in their apartment that are also fine. These newer ones are constructed slightly differently (you will notice this during assembly), are not quite as comfortable (slightly smaller and/or slightly different ergonomics) and have a bluish tinge to the clear plastic (only noticeable from the side). We ignored the bad reviews and took a risk in purchasing these because of our positive experience with the older models. Unfortunately these are not the same and we now have broken chairs that will end up in the landfill/recycling. Sad. Would rather have the old durable models and a higher price point than this. Disappointed IKEA. It's a shame, as they are nice looking flexible chairs. Hope this problem can get fixed going forward.

Tobías chairs. Super comfy but design flawed MWe love these chairs. They are so comfortable. Unfortunately we have had issue with the seat cracking down the middle. They will replace the chair if it happens within a year with proof of when it was purchased but it has also happened after a year. I would have switched to a different chair but they are just so comfy otherwise. I wish they were able to just replace the seat as it is not very environmental or cost effective to replace the whole item but obviously that’s not my call. It would be awesome if they could redesign them so this doesn’t happen. Then I’ve give them 30 stars !

Durable ChairAnonymousWhen we purchased the chair I was unsure of the durability. Well it holds out great. I can’t speak of the 243lb weight limit so I keep a sturdy rocking chair close by just in case. The acrylic hasn’t shown any signs of scratches from the constant movement of getting on and off the chair. My only recommendation would be is to get the padding for it. It is a firm sit down which I like but my wife prefers the padding of a pillow on it.
Poor quality, bad customer serviceAnaI purchased 4 of these chairs and after a few months of barely using them, one chair cracked in half. I called customer service to see if they can repair or replace it. I was basically told they have no solution for me since this chair is not covered by warranty. What a frustrating experience and waste of money.
split in halfHannahi love the design and look of this chair but seriously paid over $125 for this chair just to have it for 6 months and it splits down in the middle? i’m not even heavy i weigh 111.2 pounds. make better quality or sum cuz $125 for a chair that ain’t even last me a year is crazy
