Beautiful Chairs Easy to assembleRobertBeautiful and functional5
Machining of some metal screw parts so bad some of them were unworkable.BrianBought 6 of these chairs. Was only able to assemble 4 of them without swapping screws from one of the other chairs. Got a 5th chair assembled swapping screw parts from the 6th chair. Now need to take the 6th, parts chair, back to exchange for a new chair that I expect will only have a 66% chance of having a full set of screws without at least one that is so poorly machined that it is unworkable. The nut ends are also questionable. IKEA has also pushed the envelope a little further on the expectations that the customer can supply more than the simplest tools for assembly. They’ve supplied a hexagonal screw bit but the customer needs to supply the driver. We like the chairs and the accompanying table but have to say, assembly wise, they’re the worst we’ve ever experienced from IKEA and, for us, the saga isn’t over until we get some satisfaction on the 6th chair.2
Very uncomfortable SepehrIt is so disappointing after all the effort and assembly the chairs are so uncomfortable to sit on. It presses hardly under the thigh to the point of feeling it's blocking blood to the legs. Can't sit on them for too long. I don't recommend them at all if you have short legs. I'm 168 cm height and these are not ergnomicly comfortable for me at all. 2
Chairs so comfyDianeWe wondered if the weaved seat was tough enough for the cottage. It's very comfortable, good fo my husband's back and the weave is well protected. It's great.5
Worth the effortHeatherThese chairs arrived this week and I am actually surprised how much I like them. Two were tricky to get together (one especially) but in the grand scheme of things, that was 2 hours of time compared to the hours and hours we’ve already used them. Very sturdy and the quality is great. 5
Nightmare to assembleChenghaoThe locking assembly is difficult to align that make it impossible to tighten the structure2
Good product, but problematic to buildAnonymous reviewerWe bought 6 chairs. The final product is sturdy and looks good. We intend to replace the seats with upholstered foam seats. I have built a ton of Ikea products. 4 out of the 6 chairs were very difficult to build. The problem is the circular clasps on the front and rear bars do not engage because of bad engineering. I had to get innovative in trying different angles and orderings to finish some of the chairs. E.g. one chair took 40 minutes to assemble, but another took only 10 minutes. I can see that in some cases, a chair would be impossible to build. Also, each chair was not properly or neatly packed. The wrapping tape was a mess and completely amateurish. Not up to Ikea standard.3
Eloquence and strength KevinLove theses chairs, easy to put together and extremely sturdy. We ordered 6 chairs and it took just over 90 minutes to assemble them all. These are great chairs5
Impossible to put togetherMohammedI’ve assembled so many IKEA pieces and am accustomed to putting all types of furniture together. These are near impossible to assemble. Most frustrating IKEA purchase ever.1

SKANSNÄS Chair, brown beech

A timeless dining experience

After having designed and produced furniture for more than 70 years, we have some goodies in our archive that can serve as inspiration for new furniture. Sure, everything wasn’t better in the past, especially not comfort and flexibility, so it’s important to base the work on our needs today, just like we have done with the SKANSNÄS series.

The 1950s and 60s were a real golden age in Scandinavian design history. The lines became cleaner and the materials gave character. In our archive, Designer Mikael Axelsson found a real treasure chest of inspiration. “Typical of that time are generous chairs with wide backrests without visible fittings or screws,” tells Mikael. “But they were sold ready-assembled, and the flat pack hadn’t had its breakthrough yet.” Today, our smart wooden plug, the wedge dowel, means you can easily assemble the SKANSNÄS chair. And the plug is invisible from the outside!”

A chair to lean back in

Although many of the chairs in the archive were really comfortable, we wanted to achieve even better comfort. Through trial and error, Mikael and the team searched for the most perfect angle of the backrest and created a seat that is really comfortable to sit on for a long time. “We chose paper cord for the seat since it's strong and gives pleasant suspension when you sit on it.”

For small and large dinner parties

The SKANSNÄS series is made of beech, a hard and durable wood with beautiful graining – just like many of the furniture in the design archive. But, today most of us put higher demands on flexibility. The tables have a so-called butterfly extension. When the house is full of guests, you can easily unfold it and extend the table in a matter of seconds. “SKANSNÄS tables and chairs are made so you can lean back and enjoy small and large dinner parties for many years.” And who knows, maybe they will also become treasures in the archive that inspire future designers.

Designer thoughts

Designer thoughts

"In the work with SKANSNÄS, I did a deep dive into our IKEA archive and drew inspiration from tables and chairs from the 1950s and 60s, which was a golden age for Scandinavian design. I like the simple and soft shapes and the natural materials they used. Materials that are beautiful from the start and develop a nice patina over time. I brought all of that with me, but I also wanted to add new knowledge about ergonomics and techniques to make furniture that suits our time."
