Terribly stinky rubber gasket smells TOXICKristine K.Nobody wants a strong chemically rubber odor on anything that is made for food! This is NOT the quality that I expected when I paid more for an airtight solution from IKEA over some random crap from Amazon! EXTREMELY disappointed! I've had the jars for several months now and the horrible smell doesn't go away. My friend has ones from years ago that were excellent but these look and smell nothing like his. I needed these jars to be airtight in order to keep bugs out of them, but now I've got a new problem since the gaskets do not smell safe to use with food! I wish I'd seen the 1-star reviews others have left on the gaskets sold separately on the US site, and avoided this terribly disappointing product! It quite literally stinks! Again, I expected so much better from IKEA than to take shortcuts on cheaper materials. (The gaskets don't look white as portrayed either, they all have a sickeningly greenish tint and some are stained with red or black marks, Cheaply made!)1

KORKEN jars are ideal for preserving jams, pickles or other homemade treats. The aroma-tight seal helps to lock in flavor and since the jars are made of glass, you can easily see what’s inside, increasing the chance that food gets eaten and not thrown away.

Material

What is glass?

Glass is mainly made of sand, soda and lime melted at a high temperature. Tempering or various additives gives you extra-strong and impact-resistant glass that in some cases can be taken straight from freezer to oven without cracking. A big benefit is how glass can be recycled over and over without the quality deteriorating. Also, a lot less energy is needed to melt recycled glass compared to new raw materials. Our goal is to eventually use only recycled glass in our range.
