Material
What is rattan?
Rattan is a climbing plant belonging to the palm tree family. It grows as a vine on tree trunks, its fast-growing tendrils easily reaching 60, and sometimes more than 300, feet long. They can be harvested without harming the host trees and grow back quickly once harvested. We use this lightweight, flexible and durable material in products like armchairs, rocking chairs, side tables, outdoor furniture and for handmade baskets.
Designer thoughts
Designer thoughts
“A lot of the inspiration for KAPPELAND lamp shades in rattan came from skilled artisans in Vietnam. I made several sketches that we discussed together, and after a bit of experimenting with different weave structures, we agreed on this decorative herringbone pattern that lets light through and creates beautiful shadows in the room. The handwoven natural material and shapes means that it goes with most interior styles and spread a warm, welcoming atmosphere in your home."
