Cork top now has moldAMY E.This glass carafe is elegant looking and easy to clean. The cork top? Not so much. After using this daily for a couple months, the cork top now had mold on the underside of it. Because cork is a porous surface, cleaning away the mold will not guarantee that all the mold spores inside the lid is gone so it's going in the garbage. I wish Ikea sells replacement lids made of a different material. I am now stuck with a carafe without a lid.1

Material

What is cork?

Cork comes from cork oak bark which is carefully cut from the tree’s trunk. It then takes about nine years until the tree forms new bark that can be harvested. Since a cork oak can live to be aged 150-200, each one produces a lot of cork during its lifetime. Cork has several good qualities as a material: it’s lightweight, flexible, waterproof and naturally resists fire. The cork we use in furniture and accessories is made from cork waste that’s compressed into larger pieces.
