Ratings and reviews

Incredible value.PaddyCan't believe the price of this well made and cute shelf system. Really great product!5
Way too hard to assemble KaterynaIt's a great shelf for its price. But assembly is a pain. The bended metal parts are nor bended evenly which leads to the fact that none of the holes are lined together. It took a lot of elbow grease to put this thing together and my wrist was sore when I finished. At some point I was ready to give up, return this stubborn thing and get my self a second hand one already assembled.2
Easy to assemble, no issues.ShelaghI almost didn't buy this unit because most the reviews regarding assembly were not great. I'm glad I took a chance and bought it anyway. I had zero issues. Took me about twenty minutes to put it all together. Yes, not all the holes lined up perfectly, however, I believe that is done on purpose. As you tighten the screws it pulls the shelves and the side rails to a nice snug fit. If the predrilled holes lined up perfectly before assembly, I belive you'd end up with a wobbly unit. I'm using this piece in my art room to hold plants and some art pieces. I'm very pleased with the results. I'd buy it again and recommend it. 5
Versatile and Easy to customize the arrangementsMohanAt first we felt the material is thin and not study looking at pictures but in reality it is sturdy and strong, also we re arranged the shelf heights by drilling holes to our needs as the bar doesnt come with inbuilt holes to screw in the shelfs. Also we did plasti dip in black looks amazing and worth for the price.5
Not good!HoushangNot sturdy at all! Very hard to put it together. Screws loosen after two weeks. We bought two sets but returned the second set! 1
Great little garden shelf but…KarenIs it ever hard to out together. Nothing fits properly into the pre drilled screw holes. It requires a lot of squeezing and shoving in place. I almost gave up and wanted to return it but I really liked the galvanized finish so persevered, painfully. Note, i tried sticking grow lights on the underside of the shelves but it doesn’t work - the shelves have a under-lip so wires can pass through. I had to get magnet hooks to hang them.3
Metal shelvingJoShelving was not the easiest to put together unlike most other IKEA pieces. 3
Hyllis shelving unitFaithI love these shelves. I use one in my kitchen for my pots and cast iron frying pans. The second one I use for plants in my bedroom. I purchased the 4 shelf unit and the 3 shelf unit three years ago. The price for each one respectively was $16.99 and $11.99. Wow, the prices have more than doubled! Crazy! Great value for what I paid for them.5
I am currently using thisKatelynI am currently using this shelving unit to split up my big kitchen cupboards. It works great for what I intended it for. Even though I assembled it while in the cupboard, it was surprisingly easy to put together. The only problem that I ran into is that it did not come with a screwdriver or allen key for assembly.5
Sturdy affordable shelf/trackWivinaI like these shelves, perfect for basement storage 5
Hyllis shelfStephenOk for the money. A bit of a fiddle to assemble, sharp exposed metal edges makes it challenging since it has to be firmly held to insert the metal screws to the shelves. Extremely twisty because of the gauge of the metal4
Very difficult to assembleSarahIt's a nice shelf for the price, if only I could assemble it. The metal shelves are warped and I cannot get the holes the align to insert the screws2
Very difficult to assembleRogerThe metal was not very cooperative.2
Terrible to assemble KatrinaI do not recommend this unit as it was absolutely terrible to assemble. The holes do not line up and it took two of us to try and hold down the bars to line it up. In the end it was warped and un-even. Not worth the hassle or price1
Screws do not line up.SohailI also wish I read the reviews. The holes do not line up at all. It tooke 2 hrs to assemble it and even then it is not sturdy at all for what I need1
Good and badJacquelynFor forty bucks it’s a nice little unit, especially for small/shallow spaces. However, you need to be strong and knowledgeable enough to be able to correctly bend it so it’s straight once assembled. One of the rails and one of the shelves on ours was so twisted it took three of us to get it right. As for the holes not lining up, that’s true; the trick is to do each screw that lines up properly to full tightness, then go back and insert the remaining screws and you’ll find it easier to fully tighten them despite the holes not being completely aligned. I probably wouldn’t buy another of these units but it also wasn’t worth returning it to the nearest store 90 minutes away.3
Works very wellSharmalaWorks very well5
Nice shelvesCaroleMore robust than I thought. Ideal to store my laundry detergent and household cleaners in my garage. Very easy to assemble.5
Low design, impossible to set it upAlmai m very disappointed, I should have read the other reviews before buying it. The hole doesn't fit so impossible to set it. 1

HYLLIS creates room for life on the balcony

Some of us live smaller than we’d like. It often means a constant hunt for more space. So why not try and use the space we have in smarter ways? This was something our product developers wanted to help out with when they created a small version of HYLLIS – a shelf that fits almost anywhere – and can be used if you want to grow your own herbs and small plants.

Philip Dilé, one of the members in the development team behind HYLLIS, live in an apartment with balcony in southern Sweden. “My balcony is filled with stuff. I’d like to use it for something other than storage, and I think many of our customers feel the same way.”

Cover from the elements

To shield our balconies from weather, wind and exhaust fumes, it usually isn’t enough with the protection from the neighbor above. That’s why the team decided to create a cover for HYLLIS. They made it transparent and added ventilation holes. It makes it possible to use the cover and the shelf as a greenhouse.

Become a balcony farmer

“I grow herbs myself. It saves money and it’s fun to see life sprout on your own balcony. I think people who live in cities should be able to grow small plants and herbs too, even if they don’t have access to a garden,” says Philip. With HYLLIS shelf and cover they can do it in a small scale and use the balcony for more things than storing – a greener life and a smarter use of space at home.

What is steel?

Steel has unique characteristics when it is stretched and shaped since it remains strong. It provides strength to everything from skyscrapers and cars to bed frames and outdoor furniture. The steel industry is moving in the direction of more energy-efficient production and stronger steel qualities. It doesn’t lose any of its properties when recycled and today steel is one of the most recycled materials in the world.
