Screw can not go all the way through screw hole on steel plateVivianOn half of the hinges we bought, the screw holes on the steel plate will not let the last thread of the nails through, we couldn’t tighten the hinges to the doors as much as we’d like. To resolve that we had to file down the last thread on the nails.

Not soft closingAnonymousThis is not a soft closing hindge. It is simply dampened. When it catches the door, it shakes it violently before dampening to full closure. It is not a clip-on hindge either, which makes the installation more difficult especially with supplied philips head screws. It is better than the hindge that comes with ENHET cabinets (and is its direct replacement). Yet, it is not good enough.

Poorly MadeEdI installed these hinges recently on a Uppfora frame to attach Smastad doors. The hinges were difficult to install and could not be adjusted and screws got frozen. I ended up removing the hinges and went to the Ottawa store. The service people could not help but they exchanged the hinges for new ones. I did not want to do the install myself so I got a Task Rabbit Tasker to come and do the installation. It cost me over $100 for this. I have many European style Blum hinges in my kitchen and there were no problems with the installation. Ikea should consider using better quality hinges.

"All you need is your hands," says product developer Freddy Kramer while clicking together one PLATSA frame after another. Yes, clicking. The secret is a type of plug called a wedge dowel. Freddy goes on to explain why assembling or taking frames apart easily is an important detail. "People's lives are changing more and more today ─ we move more often, live in smaller spaces and maybe share a home with others at times. That's why our needs don't look the same throughout life."

Love in a white box
For PLATSA to be truly long-lasting, quality was just as important as flexibility and ease of assembling. But improving quality without adding to the price is not easy. "Right quality in the right place," Freddy says, and opens a cabinet door. "Here on the outside of the door, which you see and touch every day, we've used a matt foil with fine texture, while the inside, which is not as exposed, is coated with a simpler base foil." The PLATSA project took a lot of time and commitment. But it also gave results. "Those empty white boxes for the frames might not look like much at first glance, but they’re actually white boxes filled with love,” Freddy says, smiling.
