Inadequate materialsDebI bought this bookcase because it’s solid wood. Assembly was easy. When I went to install the shelves two of the four shelves were faulty. One was cut too short it did not rest on the supports. The other was warped 3 corners rested on the supports at a time. the shelf lifted when an item was placed on the shelf. There isn’t a replacement code for shelves and the chat bot is giving me the run around.
DissatisfiedValerieThis bookshelf is not of the same quality as previous Hemnes items I have purchased. The back is not solid and the photo was misleading. As I had it shipped and time was an issue I had to keep. Duct tape needed to complete the final steps . Extremely disappointing product and assembly as far as design. I have actually never been so disappointed with an ikea product . Reminds me why I stopped shopping there.
Very bad for booksAnnaThis is a bookshelf that can't hold books. It is very lightweight and the back is not wood. Resultantly, the two sides spread out and the shelves do not hold. The bottom shelf doesn't sit flush and the pins are too short so if you move it, it just falls out. I'm very shocked by how poor quality this is! If you want this shelf to hold a lot of books, do not get it! Also the pins don't fit in the holes well or they are too loose. It's a mess!
Chipping paintChristineOn both of the small rear legs parts, paint literally fell off in our hands when we removed them from the box. Thankfully, they are hidden after attaching them, so we carried on with the assembly. Then after we assembled it, we saw a gash in the side panel - which had been floor down while we assembled it. Now it's put together with these flaws and the gash is noticeable. We've bought from IKEA for years and this is a first, so we didn't examine everything carefully. Very disappointing. Do we dismantle the whole thing for a return? What a hassle. I tried to upload images but something "went wrong" over and over.
Another winner!MichaelSolid furniture but visually light. Good capacity, little bit tricky to put together, but instructions are excellent. Love the pale green and wood color combo.
Design changed for the worseSamanthaThis bookshelf is not the same as it was even 3 years ago. The new ones are cheaper materials and have plastic involved where they try to hide it but this isn't a quality bookshelf anymore. It is not strong enough to hold books. Very disappointing.
Pretty but flawedGrahamJust finished assembling the bookcase. One of the horizontal pieces that should hold the bottom shelf was missing holes for the pegs so I had to make my own. Also, several of the peg holes for other shelves were not drilled properly so I had to carefully drill them completely myself.
While putting the shelves in I realized that the sides were no particularly solid, I've read other reviews here and on other forums that the sides can bow out and shelves will collapse, I can see that happening within a year or so. I will look into securing those with planks of plywood on the back.
For the price I definitely expected much higher quality, this is just a Billy with better makeup.
Hemnes BookcaseCindyHave bought 3 of these and each one is perfect for my requirements. It's well built and stands up well over the years.
Not fit for purposeLarsIf you put books on the shelves, the side panels will bow out eventually and the shelves will fall off their pins. There is not enough stiffness in the side panels for them to serve the structural role they play.
I now have 3 bookcases that were designed to fail. Don't bother telling me about you 90 day return policy. You should be taking these back because they are not fit for purpose at any age.
Beautiful, "Solid" Bookcase, Value for MoneyAnnDon't you think that it is a rare find of wood shelves & frame, except the backboard? It coordinates very well any painted walls. I put a lot of packaged stuff rolled-up comforters, blankets, etc. on it instead of books.

Very cheaply made and broke in less than 3 months.PascalThe point of having a bookcase is to hold books. The bottom shelve gave out in less than 3 months. I've never seen a bookshelf break down like this. Wood is cheap pine wood and is absolutely not sturdy.

Good for the priceRooCrack in one of the boards. I have 5 of these and that was the only flaw in 1 of them. Otherwise good. Wish they could hold more weight. But really I have nothing to complain about.
Quality has gone downhillJessicaI have purchased 4 of these bookcases over the years. The last one was absolutely horrible quality. I cannot put too many books on it because the shelves will separate from the sides and fall down. The pages are too short. My other three from a few years back are great quality and hold a lot of books. I wanted a fifth bookcase but will not purchase this one again.
Poor qualityIanThis is cheap and poor quality. It looks good but isn’t good quality. I expected something better should have just got a billy bookcase. I’m disappointed
Classier than Billy bookcasesBarryThey look better than Billy. I particularly like that the shelves have a little play in them. This allows one to fish powe cords down the sides or corners. I have a small Turkish lamp on the 3rd shelf in one of mine. I wish I had taken more time in aligning the 3 shelf units I bought. I would buy these again and have recommended them to friends and family.
Had been redesigned due to middle shelf weaknessStephanieI bought this before the redesign in late 2024 where the middle shelf, an important part of the integrity and stability of the bookcase was poorly designed and one of the cam lock screws failed. In the redesign, it looks like there are additional pegs, the placement of the cam lock screw is now in a better position without any plastic fasteners.
