Warping PanelsOliviaI bought a couple of these bookcases and within 2 months the side panels warped and as others have mentioned the pins are too short so the shelves just fall down. We ended up using metal strapping to hold the sides in.
Look good, but have a drill handyJesseI just built 3 of these and on every one there was at least one hole that wasn’t aligned and I had to use a drill to get the piece attached. And the peg holes that hold the shelves are not consistent at all.
But, once it’s finally up, these do look quite nice. If I needed more bookshelves I would probably get these again.
Issues show up a year in!JoanneI loved this shelf when I first bought it! It looks great and the solid wood shelves are lovely. BUT I'm having the same problems as Colleen -- the shelves have warped a bit, and they're too small to sit securely on the pins, resulting in the shelves collapsing. I've tried longer pins (bought from Canadian Tire) and even bolts, but these don't solve the problems. Ironically, I thought buying a 'better quality" bookshelf than the Billy would be a good idea, but my old Billys are still going strong and this one is a real problem. I don't want to rent a van to take it to Ikea for a return.
Poor quality for priceColleenThe shelves are too short to sit on shelf pins securely. If my neighbour jumps, the floors tremble a bit and the entire bookcase shelves fall down and everything topples to floor. A real safety hazard.
stunningVictoriathese bookcases are stunning! i have two side by side and constantly get compliments on them. i love how tall and wide they are, they display my books and travel souvenirs perfectly. definitely a luxe upgrade from the plain billy bookcases and i’m so happy i bought these! also very easy to put together.
So Far, So GoodTeresaJust put the shelf together. One board was cracked, so hope it holds. ( 2800 km round trip to return it). Assembled easily with one person and some help. Looks good . I gave a mid rating on how the bookshelf works as we haven’t used it for any length of time.
Looks very niceCaeciliaIt is a bit on the light side concerning the wood material.
New design is terribleJordanSo this is the 2nd Hemnes I've bought, needed a 2nd to put up next to the 1st
First things first, different assembly, new designs omits some pieces (which leaves a noticeable gap compared to the old one)
2nd, the actual book case itself looks and feels cheaper (no wood grain, feels weaker and bland). Not to mention the shelves themselves are worse. There not even a full board of wood, they look like 100 home depot paint sticks bonded together and it's incredibly noticeable
3rd, 3 of the holes at the top to fasten the top panel onto the bookshelf aren't actually drilled in properly, so I could only put 4 of 7 screws in.
All in all I wish I could return it, but the process of disassembling it, boxing it back up and driving it back just isn't worth it.
This drop in quality went from an actual nice bookshelf to something I'd buy going into college (and not for $300 CDN)
Solid BookcaseMargaretI recently purchased 3 of these for my recreation room. They were easy to assemble and look smart. Well made and solid wood
Massive Decrease in QualitySteveI have purchased and assembled 6 of these over the years and all have assembled easily and quality has held up over time.
Recently I bought 2 more and not only is the price at least double, but the quality has decreased to the point that they are unusable.
- Holes are not lined up - tightening the top rips the fasteners out of the side due to misalignment.
- The middle shelf with plastic fasteners is out of alignment. Tightening pulls the support pegs out of the wood. (In general the wood seems lighter and prone to split.)
- Pre-drilled holes on the leg pieces were crooked.
- Surfaces themselves were scuffed and badly finished.
- Warning sticker on backing is impossible to remove without leaving sticky residue everywhere.
At first I thought I had got a lemon so I built the second one and encountered the same issues.
Will be returning both as soon as possible. Only wish I could be reimbursed for the waste of time I spent assembling and the 2 hour drive to and from the store.
New version is awful.KatI have purchased this bookcase last fall and it’s great. Well (for ikea) made furniture, pieces fit well together, no notches, rough pieces or scratches. I’ve been meaning to purchase another shelf for a while and when I saw them decrease in price, I jumped at the opportunity. I put the shelf together last night and new version is awful. Pieces are rough, lots of scratchy bits, holes that don’t line up well, thinner, more crooked pieces and general quality of it is much lower than the older model. For 50$ decrease, quality is barely 50% of what it used to be. Quite disappointing
Solid wood shelves RebekahHowever it does not seem to hold together at all. i've had mine almost 1.5 year now. The weight of the books has already bent out 3 of the shelves (more specifically the holes with the pegs). And the boning does not stay together. So do not move and do not fill completely with books and it will be fine. The back bows (which is expected over time, as per the material). And the shelves are a nice sturdy wood. The siding and legs are much lighter but still solid.
Don’t buy this if you want to put actual books on it lolSophieI guess this shelf is for decorative objects? It will last about a year before it crumbles under the weight if you put actual books on it… very cheap materials. Just don’t do it. I’m sure it’s only gotten worse since I bought it.
Love it.KirkIt is lovely. Fits right into the look of the room. A good, solid product.
Great bookcaseRuthWent together really well. Looks great in the room. Love the deep shelves. Very pleased.
Not the quality expected from IKEABradley15 years ago I bought the best bookcases ikea had to offer. Five in a row that I screwed together and they looked like a solid custom bookcase. I tried to do that again with these new bookcases offered by IKEA and not only are they made of paper but there’s no way to make the shelves more secure. Flimsy cardboard with tiny little pegs holding up shallow shelves no deeper than Billy bookcases. For the amount I paid for these bookcases I expected far more from them. They are just look with no substance. Now I ordered them so I have no way to return them. I’m trying to figure out how I can reinforce the shelves without ripping up the pressed paper walls. At least the old chip board could be screwed into to strengthen the shelves. I could add trim to give the bookcases a finished custom look. People joke about IKEA being throw away furniture that you can’t move without risk of it falling apart. This new pressed paper material is that joke come to life. I’m broke and lost everything because of covid and the market so these are it for me. Luckily I used to be an Interior Designer and I will figure out a way to strengthen and reinforce these bookcase shelves so they won’t come crashing down with books 📚 on them. Three have already given out and the little pegs ripped open the holes you can’t use them. I’m thinking of using small metal L brackets but I’m going to have to gently screw them into the pressed paper walls. Perhaps glue will help strengthen it. Doesn’t mean they won’t rip out of the paper if I put twenty pounds of books on them. IKEA claims each shelf can hold up to 40 pounds! It’s just so very disappointing to see how low IKEAs quality has fallen. These aren’t worth the cost.
Beautiful shelfLauraBeautiful, sturdy and easy to assemble.
Great shelfAmnaWas a bit timely to put together; but otherwise a solid shelf
Love the quality of HemnesTammieMy preferred furniture products from IKEA is the HEMNES Line, I like the pine over the glued sawdust. It seems to be more sturdy and handles a move really well.
Great product reasonable pricePeterWe were able to confirm there were some in the store we were going to drive by. Quick and convenient
