Easy to put together !LinhEasy to put together !
Minimalist design works for meAlanFor what I needed, the Elvarli system worked well. We have a walk in closet with angles, so finding a system to maximize the space was a challenge. I realized I didn’t need a cupboard within a closet! Because Elvarli works with central posts, not cabinets I was able to go through several iterations to work out the best configuration. And what I started with was not how it ended up.
And how it ended up turned what felt like a cramped dingy closet into a bright spacious storage room. When people say it now feels ‘massive’ you know it’s been transformed.
What do I like about it?
- The system is very modular and configurable, so you can change your mind as you build it.
- The components, including drawers, are off the floor - so I don’t have to worry too much about the awkwardly positioned floor register in my closet being blocked!
- it uses the space really well - my corners feel accessible and it doesn’t feel cluttered, even though we still have ample hanging space. I was able to work with the angles in my closet to great effect.
- My wife loves the shoe shelves.
What could be better?
- For my application, I did not like the side rack version of Elvarli at all. Only the post version.
- You have to be very precise about where you install the posts, and once they’re screwed into the ceiling it’s not very easy to move them - and you’ll have holes in your ceiling. (But the good news is you can adjust with trial and error before you commit.) You’ll need a precise level and measuring tape to check and double check.
- The cost mounts up - you need brackets to support each drawer and shelf you install, which isn’t immediately obvious.
- the little pieces that lock the brackets in place can be quite fiddly and you have to ensure they slide all the way down into the groove in the post.
- You might be tempted to cut the shelves or hanging bars to precise length. The product is clearly NOT designed to do this. (But you could if you didn’t use the IKEA shelves and bars.)
- Your top shelves will have gaps because the poles will be in between them. I didn’t find this to be a big an issue as I thought it might be.
- The components have to be installed in certain pre-drilled slots, which means you can’t move the components a couple of inches up or down once they’re in place. Because of my angles I would have liked to install a shelf two inches lower than the one next to it, but it was not possible.
- Some components are not always in stock and so make sure you can get everything you need before you commit! (I had to go back three times to get the 40cm shelves and narrow shoe shelves I needed, and still can’t get hold of the wide shoe shelves. My IKEA store says it may take months.)
- is there a install tool recycling program? I have one or two for every component I bought!! Plus all the little brackets and bits I couldn’t use.
