Ratings and reviews

I adore these, but…Bertie…the assembly is such a pain. Literally. My hands were so sore after putting these together. Some of them go together easily, some take massive effort. Mapping them onto the wall is easy with a level and the included template. We have eight up right now (plan on getting more in spite of assembly difficulties) and they look fabulous. They were a great way to add a ton of bookshelf/trinket space while preserving floor space. For what they are, they’re a great price. We have the dark green and dark brown, and it adds a very woodsy vibe to our library/pprimary bedroom space. 4
Only good for floor installation, not wallsAysegulA lot of reviewers complaining about the back plate assembly need to pick side #1 at the beginning as stated in the assembly manual. I made the same mistake at first. BUT this is not really the problem with this product. The real problem is the wall mount system. These always need a proper stud at the back, if not you will have to use drywall anchors. This unit provides a very poorly designed back plate which will definitely need re-alignment by removing an already installed cube. This, unfortunately, will most certainly wear out the anchor at the back and now you are left with a "dangling and unsafe shelf on the wall". I had to remove 3-4 cubes from the wall and move plates to start all over with new holes. What a waste of time.2
Some minor improvementsLuisI haven't set 5 to the rating due to these two items that can be improved. - The assembly of the sides does not have a perfect fit, needing some hammering to help align the parts. - The fixing on the wall, using that metal part fixed on both sides, needs to be redesigned to make it easier to remove if needed. I had to use some punches, and this caused the screw with the anchor to cut the drywall.3
EketDawnVery tricky getting the glass door hinge screws to go in straight. I try to pretap a small hole for the screw but still a great deal of patience. Otherwise a great display item with the glass door. Bravo!4
Awful assembly systemDenisWe considered ourselves “veteran” IKEA builders after furnishing several homes (ours and kids). The assembly system for the Eket cube is completely different than any other IKEA piece … and much worse. Make sure you get it right first time - which we didn’t because it was impossible to mount the last wall of the cube with the back panel. 1
Great product!EdGreat product, easy to put together!5
beautiful finishKimlove the finish of this piece but the shelf was too deep for me to hang on the shelf. looks great stacked on the floor though4
EketSuzanSmart looking, I was looking for something for a small narrow room to hold the tv with storage.5
perfectDavegives me useable floor space underneath, great for the dog, she has room on the floor5
poor design and poor quality XhensilaThe assembly for this unit is poorly designed, especially putting back the last part of the unit it's a nightmare.1
READ THIS FOR TIPS ON THIS INSANE ASSEMBLY PROCESSJade1. Don't bother with the particle board back, the pieces probably won't slot together otherwise 2. The black stir stick straw things go in the very back of the drawer sliders-- idk how I'd have found them if I also didn't omit the mathin' particle board back!! Seriously though, I don't think I'd buy this product again for assembly alone. They look good if you can put you manage to get the pieces locked together without weird alignments, but I won't be wall mounting these so can't speak for how sturdy they'll be in the long run. But I've had Pax and Hemnes before and they assembled with way more ease and less body pain. If you do buy these, just save your body the pain of cramming the pieces together and leave out the particle board (stick it on with some brad nails or something).2
Great cubes to use as a night standJoanThe cube is easy to assemble but was kind of disappointed that it didn’t come with the wall hanger. I don’t mind having to pay extra but it would have been nice to know I needed before I left the store.3
Great storage - wonderful optionsKrstanaGreat storage - wonderful options to design your own wall arrangements and be creative5
EketBrandyI bought this item originally as I thought it would fit the pet cube insert, but it did not.5
Wall mounting difficultGregAt 12” wide your chances of hitting a stud for the metal cleat is slim, this means using wall anchors in drywall. I had everything level and when I snapped the cabinet over the cleat it moved out of level - to remove and adjust the levelling screws I had to bang the bottom up to release from the tension fit cleat and this caused the wall anchors to push and move inside the drywall. This made it move out of level more and the more times I forced it out to level the worse it got. On top of it the there is no room for the Allan key to adjust the set screws. This may have worked on the engineers computer but in reality it is not clever - only buy this if your are using with legs3
EketDianeExcellent product - Availability on certain colors limited; long Delivery dates5
Not impressed!AnnThis was way more complicated to put together than any other ikea flat pack I've ever made.2
hard to assemble without proper toolsRosanneAligning and sliding the sides with the plastic tabs into the sides with the holes was very difficult. Suggest assembling on an even, flat solid surface. Stand sides up, cover the edges with a thick towel and use a rubber mallet to gentle hammer the edges to slide them in place. Flip the sides over and hammer the edges. This will even out the hammering and prevent splaying of the joint. Make sure the panel slot is aligned. Making the front edges flush first may cause misalignment of slot for back panel. Ikea could have used a simpler method to hold the sides together (e.g. a butt joint instead of a miter joint to assemble the sides). Once assembled properly, it looks okay and functions as expected.2

EKET Cabinet, white, 13 3/4x13 3/4x13 3/4 "

From grandfather's fishing boxes to playful storage

When product developer Petra Kammari Enarsson was a young student and often moved, she used to furnish her apartments with old fishing boxes given to her by her grandfather who lived on the west coast of Sweden. Years later, when Petra was developing the new EKET storage series, those boxes came to mind. How could she make the series as flexible as the boxes?

New technologies, new hobbies, a new family member ... both small and large changes affect life and people's needs at home, especially when it comes to all the things that we need space for. Petra Kammari Enarsson is a product developer at IKEA and often visits the homes of customers to experience their everyday living and how good storage can make life at home a little easier. She remembers a family in Copenhagen which expanded every other weekend with the daughter from a previous relationship. ”She didn't have her own room, but the family had a solution where she had a loft bed in the living room and her private things were in a chest on the floor”. Petra thinks it's a good example of how more and more people are living in small spaces, and that a large part of everyday living takes places in the living room where we want things to be both practical and stylish.

Flexible furniture for new needs

Another obvious trend around the world is that many people move more often - just as Petra did when she was young. ”The problem is that a lot of storage furniture is so inflexible – upon moving or new needs arising, they can't be adapted. This means storage isn't optimal and it's difficult to keep track of all your things”. These insights inspired Petra and her colleagues to start looking at a more flexible and personal storage solution – something that can easily be updated so that people don't have to buy new furniture as soon as something in life changes. Petra then started to think about those fishing boxes she had when she was young and which were so easy to stack and move as needed. What if you could make a piece of furniture which consists of various smart modules that can be easily moved around, removed and added to?

Building with blocks

Petra and her team started by ordering cardboard boxes in various sizes. They took the boxes to different room environments where they moved them around like building blocks – stacking and combining them in various ways. The team also researched detailed facts about storage: on average, how many magazines do we have at home? What’s the ideal height for people to put down their mobile phones? ”Many of us put keys, telephones or bags in a specific place when we come home. We usually do it automatically, without thinking about it”, says Petra. The height that seems to suit most people is 31½", so a shelf at that height was a given in the mix of shelves, drawers and cabinets in different colors and styles that eventually became the EKET storage series. ”I'm so pleased that we chose to prioritize playfulness and freedom of choice with all the colors and sizes of EKET”, says Petra, who's looking forward to visiting more homes. ”I think that the customers will find lots of exciting combinations that we haven't even thought of!”.

What is constructed board?

We use constructed boards when manufacturing many of our pieces of furniture, such as tables and wardrobes. They are light yet still stable and strong. Each board has a frame made of chipboard, fibreboard or solid wood, while the inside is a honeycomb filling structure made of mostly recycled paper, which is extra durable thanks to its special construction. The board is then covered with a protective paint, foil or veneer depending on the style wanted.
