“I was inspired by classic industrial furniture typically used in workshops during the 50’s, as well as Meccano, to create the design,“ Lina says. “The idea was to create these beautiful storage units that have double the weight carrying capacity of any other shelves we were making at the time.” Engineer Philip Nedergaard made sure that the design held true to the heavy-duty ambition. “We built some of what we call ‘worst-case scenarios’ by loading the shelves high with concrete bags to really test that the shelves could safely hold almost anything you would want to keep in a garage,“ he says.

Perfect size, awkward assembly, a tad flimsyAnonymousI was looking for a shelving unit that I could use for holding a few PCs that make up a home lab and this shelving unit was the perfect size. The shelves are deep enough to prevent cases from overhanging and the height was perfect. The assembly is pretty straight forward but it is a bit out of the usual Ikea style what with need to use a hammer and a sheet metal protector. Nevertheless, assembly went together without too much difficulty. The shelving unit is made out of pretty thin sheet metal compared to other shelving units that I have. I have no doubt that this shelve will be able to hold an adequate amount of weight but the unit is *very* prone to racking. I have mine on a wheels platform and you can easily rack it out of square with almost no force (more front to back than side to side because of the X-brace at the back). I plan to add some thin plywood to the side to give this thing a bit more rigidity.
Great product for the garageAnonymousI purchased the short Bror shelves for my garage and was very impressed with the build quality. The directions are not as clear as I expected from IKEA however the Bror is very simple to build. The little block used to hammer the supports in is far to short so WATCH YOUR FINGERS!

DonalI bought this unit to store my audio eqt on. Would encourage the option of “raw” plywood shelves .I would prefer to make my own insert of a higher quality than is offered. Other colours -grey or olive green. The black does seem to suck the light out of a room. When I look at your products I do tend to calculate how I would improve the appearance.

The strongest storage we’ve made so far
Does your garage sometimes feel like a lost civilization? Pyramids of paint cans grouped around the car, sports equipment you can’t remember even using and forgotten hobbies in boxes stacked high. IKEA product developer Lina Ringefelt wanted to help out. The outcome: the heavy-duty BROR storage system.
Lina and her team researched peoples’ garage needs and found that there’s an interest in everything from full-on hobby rooms, to a place to pot plants and work on cars, as well as storage for everything from heavy power tools to seasonal equipment. Many people also want lockable, closed and open storage that could hold very heavy loads.

The result is an adjustable series of shelving units with closed and open storage, including a cart that serves as a movable shelf and workstation. But perhaps the series biggest calling card is its combination of looks and function. BROR could definitely be used in the home too.

BROR storage system can withstand a lot. The widest and deepest shelves actually hold 285 lbs. and the smallest shelves can hold 154 lbs. This means that you can store both tires and heavy flower pots without problems. We know this since we tested the storage system by filling the shelves with concrete bags – all to ensure that they can safely hold almost anything you can imagine storing, regardless if the surroundings are tropically moist or dry and freezing cold.
