Cheap Quality NowKathrynI was worried about the negative reviews when I purchased the new Billy bookcase, and I am sad to say that they were right. This bookcase is not at all what it used to be. The new paper foil is cheap and scratches easily. The backsheet no longer requires nails (which is nice), but the quality of it is also cheaper and breaks easily. The folding lines down the back are also much more apparent making the bookcase look cheap overall. I hope Ikea considers bringing back the previous model. For this price point, it should be better quality.
Huge Drop in Quality Compared to the Original BILLYMarceloI own two older BILLY bookcases in my den where I display my LEGO collection, and they have been excellent for years. The original design was sturdy, clean, and perfect for collectors.
Recently, I bought a new BILLY for my daughter’s bedroom, and the difference in quality is shocking. The new version feels like a huge downgrade: cheaper materials, poor finishing, and an overall look that honestly feels like a knockoff of the original BILLY IKEA used to sell.
It’s a real shame that IKEA took one of its most iconic and best-selling products—especially one loved by LEGO collectors—and turned a great design into a budget version with noticeably worse quality.
I’m giving this 2 stars only because BILLY is still one of the best options for displaying collections. But I really miss the old version. Why not sell a premium BILLY at a higher price point and keep this lower-quality version as a budget option? I would gladly pay more for the quality IKEA used to stand for.

Of course, quality is good, it feels maybe better than the white ones... I definitely recommend. I wish there were more furniture pieces in this colour. Easy to put together, I did it by myself in like 1.5 hours. Do it!
SizeEdwardThe Billy bookcase is economical and practical. It’s been on the market for years but has seen some improvements over time. The only thing I’d suggest is increasing its depth to 12 inches; I believe that would make it even more useful.
Billy Library!CindyWe bought 5 of these bookcases plus the toppers! We turned our spare bedroom into a library. Then we put two chairs in there. Now one of our favourite places to be.
Still the best bookcasesLanaI bought my first Billys over 25 years ago and despite multiple moves, they still look great. I ordered more Billys for my new house and am very pleased that they are still very nice.
Bring back the previous style that is better quality!RachelSuper disappointed with the very poor quality of the "NEW" Billy bookcase. They don't even compare to the former Billy product.
The updated Billy is not worth it. The updated thin and easily damaged new paper foil is poor quality. This white bookcase after just being assembled today already has visible small tears and imperfections in the foil. You can see the particleboard texture on the shelf edges under the paper foil- not smooth like the old ones IKEA stop trying to lower prices by making lower quality products. I would rather pay more for something that doesn't tear. I am positive that after being in use for a short time these bookcases will be tossed in the garbage. Waste of money.

Parts did not come with the wooden planks, tried ordering spares but couple of important parts are always out of stock. Still sitting in my storage unassembled.

A flimsy shadow of the former BillyKristaThe updated Billy is not worth the buy. I know they updated the back panel to make it easier to disassemble for moving, but given how thin and easily damaged the new paper foil is, this bookcase will be tossed when moving. My other two billy bookcases have survived 3 moves but they were better made. You can see the particleboard texture on the shelf edges under the paper foil- not smooth like the old ones I wish IKEA would stop trying to lower prices by making lower quality products. I would rather pay more for something that doesn't dent during assembly.
Billy be goodRaymondThe Billy book case is perfect for my needs. Used it as a display case with glass doors. Easy to build and thankfully the delivery fellows were able to drop them off on the second floor. I would have given 5 stars if it was a little cheaper but otherwise a solid bookcase.
