SizeEdwardThe Billy bookcase is economical and practical. It’s been on the market for years but has seen some improvements over time. The only thing I’d suggest is increasing its depth to 12 inches; I believe that would make it even more useful.

The updated Billy is not worth it. The updated thin and easily damaged new paper foil is poor quality. This white bookcase after just being assembled today already has visible small tears and imperfections in the foil. You can see the particleboard texture on the shelf edges under the paper foil- not smooth like the old ones IKEA stop trying to lower prices by making lower quality products. I would rather pay more for something that doesn't tear. I am positive that after being in use for a short time these bookcases will be tossed in the garbage. Waste of money.

I know they updated the back panel to make it easier to disassemble for moving, but given how thin and easily damaged the new paper foil is, this bookcase will be tossed when moving. My other two billy bookcases have survived 3 moves but they were better made. New and improved!AshleeI have been a long time fan of the Billy Bookcase. Price point is perfect and so is the quality. I was always frustrated by securing the backing rather than panel with the tiny nails. No matter how precise I tried to be one always managed to miss and go through the shelf. They have illuminated this frustrating task and changed it to pre-drilled holes where you instal a plastic plug and then a securing plastic nail. This is so much more efficient and less frustrating! Thank you ikea!!
GoodMatthewPretty good bookcase. It is a little wobbly. But, it includes wall mounting brackets & screws. I just don't have confidence in my ability to install it alone.
Also, I would prefer to be able to freely move the bookcase to different spots.
And, I wish the shelf bracket holes were slightly closer together, for a tighter fit on shelves, for certain items. (Funko POPs)

We took a closer look at BILLY and came up with some ideas. One of them means more efficient use of materials, and another makes the bookcase easier to assemble and take apart.
“BILLY was introduced in 1979 and has helped millions of people to organize books and other things in the home. But the world has changed a lot since then, and even popular big-sellers need to adapt to new demands and ways of living,” says Umut Ates, one of our co-workers.
Paper means smarter use of raw materials

BILLY fits just as well in the living room as in other areas of the home – the office, dining room or library. It’s easy to expand and combine with other furniture. But one thing that has had potential for improvement is how the bookcase is assembled and taken apart. “Previously, you had to nail about 50 small nails to get the back panel in place, but that’s history now. Instead, you snap on the back panel without any tools,” explains Umut. It also makes it easier to disassemble BILLY without damaging it if you move or want to resell your bookcase. “The improvements have made BILLY more adaptable – it can keep up changing life situations – and it wouldn’t surprise me if this storage hero is as popular in 40 years as it is today.”
