Good looking bookcase but tiring process KariseI ordered this bookcase for my room it looked good and easy to assemble. But what’s frustrating was it did not come with the hardware required to build when it arrived. I had to contact customer support to order the parts for me because there was a limit to how much I could order of each piece. The pieces took nearly the last estimated day so I was stuck with a unbuilt case in my room. Many of the edges and sides had dents and or chipped but thankfully not all of it was that visible. Overall, decent bookcase, it serves its purpose but the entire process was just frustrating.

Multiple broken parts and hardwareAudrey-AnneI waited a long time for this to come back in stock, paid for shipping since it wasn't available online and received multiple damaged parts and even completely broken hardware... making it impossible to build it even if I was willing to accept all the damaged shelves. And I can't even order the hardware because the website says it's out of stock! If you pay for shipping and they make you bring back the heavy box to the store they should refund the shipping. Ridiculous.
New and improved…mostlyAshleeI have been a long time fan of the Billy Bookcase. Price point is perfect and so is the quality. I was always frustrated by securing the backing rather than panel with the tiny nails. No matter how precise I tried to be one always managed to miss and go through the shelf. They have illuminated this frustrating task and changed it to pre-drilled holes where you instal a plastic plug and then a securing plastic nail. This is so much more efficient and less frustrating!
This particular one however had an issue where the strapping sealing the edges has delaminated. I’m not sure how to fix it and it’s actually just going to peal off when snagged.

We took a closer look at BILLY and came up with some ideas. One of them means more efficient use of materials, and another makes the bookcase easier to assemble and take apart.
“BILLY was introduced in 1979 and has helped millions of people to organize books and other things in the home. But the world has changed a lot since then, and even popular big-sellers need to adapt to new demands and ways of living,” says Umut Ates, one of our co-workers.
Paper means smarter use of raw materials

BILLY fits just as well in the living room as in other areas of the home – the office, dining room or library. It’s easy to expand and combine with other furniture. But one thing that has had potential for improvement is how the bookcase is assembled and taken apart. “Previously, you had to nail about 50 small nails to get the back panel in place, but that’s history now. Instead, you snap on the back panel without any tools,” explains Umut. It also makes it easier to disassemble BILLY without damaging it if you move or want to resell your bookcase. “The improvements have made BILLY more adaptable – it can keep up changing life situations – and it wouldn’t surprise me if this storage hero is as popular in 40 years as it is today.”
