When the assembled lamp stands next to the packaging, it can be hard to see how it can fit there at all. A part of the explanation is the cross-shaped base. “We realized that we could make a cross instead of a round base – both to save material and to make the lamp dividable. The cross also adds a unique design element.” The lampshade is made of soft plastic and rolled up like a tube in the packaging. When mounted on the lamp base, it spreads the light both evenly and beautifully.

PracticalMelThis lamp is perfect for the space that did not have a light source. The height & design are ideal for the location. We would have given this 5-⭐️s but the assembling the lamp shade is not as simple as shown on the instructions. Plus, we had to be careful to avoid damaging it since was made of pliable plastic.

Don't waste your moneyAnonymous reviewerThis floor lamp is very poorly designed and frustrating to assemble. The white plastic shade comes rolled the wrong way and does not hold its shape at all. Trying to unwrap and keep both sides attached at the same time is almost impossible, and the result looks warped and cheap.
The three metal rods also feel loose and unstable, which makes the whole lamp feel flimsy and unreliable. Even after following the instructions, the lamp does not look properly assembled and feels like it could fall apart easily.
I understand this is a low-priced item, but the quality and design are unacceptable. I would not recommend this lamp and would suggest spending a bit more for something sturdier and better designed.
Miraculous price and a soft, warm glow.SarahOne of my very favourite IKEA pieces. I went back and bought 2 more ! $8 CDN is crazy. Of course the shade is light-weight, so that it can be flat-packed. Shaping the shade is easy if you follow the instructions to roll it backwards and then flatten it under some heavy books for a while. Putting the plastic prongs into the slits is not difficult, it just takes some patience. I asked my 8 yr old to do it--no problem. If no patience just tape it and turn that side to the wall, I suppose. Guys: it's $8.

Bad lamp shadeVictoriaThe lamp shade is a rolled up plastic sheet, I had to tape it together because it wouldn’t connect, there’s no adhesive to hold it. Only a sort of puzzle piece groove. I’d spend the extra knowing what I do now for another lamp lol. Will probably change the lampshade soon.
Value is in the priceDanaThe Barlast lamp is an inexpensive way to put light into a space. Components are surprisingly sturdy. Gave only 3 stars due to difficulty in getting the shade shaped. Had to resort to some adhesive tape to keep it together & yes I rolled it backward when it came out of the box.

Clumsy item SandeepThat is why it was on sale. The three prongs under bulb are free falling. Had to tape them just after 2 days and 20 times prongs which hold the shade up fall. Power cord is kinda small.

Big design in a small package
Every now and then you need to think outside the famous box to achieve something innovative. But, when we developed BARLAST lamp, we instead stayed inside the box. The goal was a really good lamp at a really good price, and that made the packaging a decisive starting point. From there, we worked our way backwards with materials and design.
Cecilia Sondell Banke, one of our product engineers involved in the work with BARLAST, explains why the packaging can be so crucial for the price: “Transportation is often an essential part of the product cost. By packing the lamp efficiently, we avoid transporting air, and the total cost becomes lower.”

All our specialists need to be on board from the start, and we have to think through the whole process step by step. But, they are also very creative projects that we learn a lot from. And when it comes to BARLAST it resulted in a really nice lamp in a small package,” Cecilia sums up.
