One day wins: A quick and affordable hall closet makeover
For those challenging spaces that become a cluttered "catch-all" in your home, try these easy and affordable ideas to update and organize, making life at home more enjoyable... giving you time to enjoy what’s most important!

With one day, $250 and some IKEA experts, we joined Megan and Don, busy parents of Grace and Nate (both under two years of age), in their home. We wanted to understand the challenges and frustrations they face daily when it comes to their hallway linen closet. Megan felt that “it’s a catch-all, it has a little bit of everything in it, and it only has three shelves, it’s a mishmash of stuff and is not functional.” Her wish:
It would be good to have a spot for everything and make it neat and organized and functional.”

After a short consultation and getting to know Megan and her family's daily routines, we knew that we needed to find ways to maximize their existing closet space and make it more efficient (and inspiring, of course!). So off to IKEA we went, in search of the perfect solutions.
Back at Megan's home, we started our project by using SPANTAD vacuum seal bags to reduce the footprint of pillows and duvets in an extra closet down the hall. This allowed us to relocate the towels from the main closet and gave us more workable space – and added convenience by storing all of the family’s linens in one location.
Next, we needed to make better use of the closet's three oddly spaced shelves. OBSERVATÖR clip-on baskets and VARIERA shelf inserts were the perfect choice. By installing these, we were able to utilize the vertical space and make the most of shelf depth that typically sits unused - making items easier to view and access.
We then gathered bulk and other items such as diapers, wipes and baby accessories found throughout the home. By labelling and placing them in RABBLA storage boxes, we could fit more into the closet since they’re stackable. Bonus: the versatile style of RABBLA boxes suits any room, and they can even be taken into the bathroom since the materials withstand moisture.
Our next task was to find a solution for the “catch-all” items that needed a home. With many items not used on a daily basis, transparent containers such as VARDAGEN jars and SAMLA bins let Megan see at a glance what she has and when she needs to re-stock - saving both time and money.
As a mother of two, Megan often finds herself with only one free hand. So we placed everyday items such as receiving blankets and baby toiletries in an easy to move PLEJA caddy for a quick grab and go – making life just a little easier for Mom.
Together with Megan, we were able to transform her closet in one day into an efficient and functional space, giving Megan more energy to focus on what’s really important and spend time with her family.
Now I want to do all my closets, and I’m getting great ideas about what I could do elsewhere.”
