The IKEA return policy

We’ve detailed everything about our generous IKEA return policy on this page that apply regardless of how you made your purchase. 

Too big? Too small? Too something else? If you’re not completely satisfied or simply just change your mind, you can return a new and unopened IKEA product within 365 days, with proof of purchase, for a full refund to the original method of payment.  No rush, no complicated conditions.

We think everyone should be able to test any product, so we take back opened products within 90 days – even assembled ones, as long as it’s in unused and re-saleable condition (at IKEA’s sole discretion) with proof of purchase. Mattress purchases may be exchanged one time or returned within 90 days under our Mattress Love it or Exchange it policy. Custom-cut fabrics and custom countertops are excluded. 

Some conditions apply. IKEA reserves the right to refuse a return (or exchange) or offer a refund card only.  Government photo ID may be required.

Returning unopened IKEA products

You can return new and unopened IKEA product within 365 days, with proof of purchase, for a full refund to original method of payment.  No rush, no complicated conditions. ​ 

Returning opened IKEA products

We think everyone should be able to test any product, so we take back opened products within 90 days – even assembled ones as long as it’s in unused and re-saleable condition (in IKEA’s sole discretion)  with proof of purchase.

Products that are assembled with no evidence of use will be refunded to original method of payment.

Products that have been tested and tried with some traces of use will be refunded on an IKEA refund card.

IKEA products that can’t be returned​

Cut fabric, custom countertops as well as products that have been heavily used, dirty, stained, damaged and/or modified are excluded from our IKEA return policy. IKEA reserves the right to refuse a return (or exchange) or offer a refund card only, whereby IKEA, in its sole discretion, suspects abuse of the return policy.  

Things to note: IKEA returns, IKEA refunds and IKEA exchanges

IKEA return policy conditions:

  • To ensure that your return goes smoothly, we ask you to bring your proof of purchase when you return an item and if possible the packaging
  • Custom cut fabrics and custom countertops cannot be returned. 
  • Can't find your proof of purchase?  We will refund on an IKEA refund card the lowest selling price in the last year. 
  • You have proof of purchase from an IKEA store abroad?  If the article is part of our range we will refund on an IKEA refund card to the lowest selling price in the last year. 
  • Products belonging to one of the categories below can be returned within 90 days and will be refunded on an IKEA refund card. 
    • Products from the Swedish Food market
    • Live plants
    • Products purchased in As-is 
  • An IKEA refund card is valid at all IKEA stores in Canada or on IKEA.ca

The IKEA ‘Love it or exchange it’ mattress exchange policy

‘Love it or exchange it’ is our IKEA 90-day trial policy for newly purchased mattresses. ​It takes time for you and your new mattress to get used to each other. That's why we give you 90 days to be sure you're compatible. So, after you’ve slept on it a while, you can exchange your mattress if you find it too firm or too soft. When you've found your perfect match, you can sleep easy for years to come with our free 10-year mattress warranty. 

Things to note: IKEA mattress exchange

  • You can exchange or return your mattress once within 90 days with proof of purchase. 
  • The only condition is that it’s not dirty, marked or damaged. ​ 
  • The policy doesn’t apply to bed bases, bed slats or mattress toppers. 
  • New mattresses often feel a bit too firm, so wait at least a month for your body to get used to the mattress and for the mattress to get used to your body.
  • To get the best comfort you also need the right pillow, make sure you have a pillow that suits you and your new mattress.
  • Once you’ve found your perfect mattress, it’ll be covered by our 10-year mattress warranty
  • If your mattress exchange is an upgrade, you’ll just cover the price difference between the original and the replacement. ​(Delivery/pickup fees apply)
  • If the replacement’s price is lower, we’ll credit the difference to an IKEA refund card for you to use towards a future purchase. (Delivery/pickup fees apply)
