Fresh pillowcases help protect your pillows, skin and health

The humble pillowcase may seem like one of the simpler linens in our lives, but chances are it’s the only one you spend 8 hours a night with your face pressed directly against! Simply put, something doesn’t have to be complicated to be important, and keeping your pillowcases clean and fresh can bring a host of benefits.

Help your pillows last longer

Pillowcases are the primary line of defence in protecting your pillows against everyday wear and tear, including sweat and skin oils. By changing your pillowcases regularly, you’ll help your pillow stay clean longer, minimizing how often it will need to be washed.

Make fresh pillowcases part of self-care

The self-care movement is (thankfully!) in full swing, with more people taking time to intentionally nurture themselves physically and emotionally. In practice, this can include a limitless array of activities, from taking up yoga or meditation to simply making time in the morning to watch the news. For many people, a daily skincare regimen is a pivotal aspect of their self-care, and often includes using rich serums or restorative masks at night. While these skincare marvels can work wonders on your complexion, without regular laundering they can also build up on your pillowcases. If you have a product-heavy nighttime skincare routine, consider changing your pillowcases twice as often as your sheets.

What is the best pillowcase for your sleep?

All pillowcases will extend the life of your pillow. That said, pick the right material pillowcase and you will feel the difference. Cotton pillowcases are popular due to their breathability and softness, making them ideal for a comfortable night's sleep.

Practical tips for maintaining your pillowcases

To keep your pillowcases in top condition, wash them regularly—ideally once a week. This helps remove dirt, oils, and allergens, ensuring a fresh and clean sleeping environment. Use a gentle cycle with mild detergent for cotton pillowcases to preserve their softness and durability. Always follow the care instructions on the label to keep your pillowcases looking and feeling their best.

Washing pillowcases kills dust mites. We shed quite a bit of dead skin while we sleep, which just happens to be a favourite meal of dust mites. Many people are highly sensitive to dust mites, making regular laundering of sheets and pillowcases at a high temperature a must. This makes a cotton pillowcase especially popular for allergy sufferers as they can be washed and dried on high temps.

Is your pillow sometimes a pet bed? Whether you share your home with a dog, cat, bunny or other furry friend or friends, if they’re allowed on the bed they usually find their way to the pillow. And who could blame them? But for as cute and comfy as they look curled up where you lay your head at night, their dirty paws and dander can spell big sneezing trouble. If you can’t keep them off the pillows, changing the pillowcases after their nap is the next best solution!
