When is it safe for a child to start using a quilt?

For babies under 12 months, it's best to avoid using pillows, comforters and quilts altogether due to the risk of suffocation. Once your child is over one year old, you can start introducing these bedding items, but always ensure they are appropriate for their age and size.

What tog rating is suitable for a child's quilt?

As your child grows into toddlerhood, typically around two years old, they can start using a quilt or duvet with a higher tog rating. Before that, stick to lighter ratings (4-9), keeping in mind that young children usually have an easier time keeping warm under a comforter than an adult would. That is unless the bedroom temperature is very low. For children over three, a duvet with a tog rating of 4.5 is often enough, as long as the bedroom maintains a steady temperature. As the winter chill sets in and temperatures drop, you might want to consider switching to a warmer duvet to ensure your little one stays snug and cozy.

Practical tips for maintaining kid's duvets

Keep your kid's duvet or quilt in top condition for maximum comfort. Always follow the care instructions on the label, and consider using a duvet cover to protect against spills and stains. Washing the duvet cover frequently and thoroughly airing it out will help keep it fresh.

Consider complementing the duvet with a pillow specifically made for children, as it can further increase comfort. You should then look for pillows that offer the right balance of support and softness.
