The Canadian Library

In remembrance of Indigenous women and children

The Canadian Library is a grassroots art installation project that honours the lives of First Nations, Métis and Inuit women and children that have suffered abuse or lost their lives due to brutality and unjust systems. It intends to help educate, create awareness, advocate, and start important conversations to help towards healing and true reconciliation.

The Canadian Library art installation will be on display from September 30th to December 31st, 2022, in all IKEA Canada stores.

Let's share their stories

This beautiful community-engaged installation of over 8,000 hard-cover books are individually covered in Indigenous-inspired fabric and the names of lives lost, are printed in gold letters, and placed on the spines of these books to respect and honour the thousands of murdered and missing Indigenous women and children.

Why the BILLY bookcase?

The Canadian Library’s desire to partner with IKEA was born the day they were gifted with their first bookcase, a tall BILLY bookcase. While delivering the BILLY for the installation, and learning more about the aim of the project, the donor shared her own story. The donor’s mother is a survivor of the Shingwauk Residential School and to have her kick-off this journey was very powerful! Her support, guidance, and donation of the first bookcase led The Canadian Library to IKEA and this beautiful collaboration.

Bright Indigenous designed fabrics

The art and design of the fabrics used to cover the books are sourced by local Indigenous businesses. This is another way The Canadian Library is supporting the Indigenous community.
