How to buy VIDGA curtain tracks – 4 easy steps

Step-by-step guide

Here you can find out how to measure and calculate how many VIDGA curtain tracks you need for your curtain setup, whether with one or two layers of curtains, so that you have everything you need whether you are hanging your curtains from the ceiling or on the wall.

1. Measure your window

Here's how to calculate the length of the curtain track:

Measure the width of the window.
Add at least 15 cm on each side. This is so the curtains can be drawn a bit out onto the wall to hide the window frame and to prevent the curtain from covering the entire window.
This is the total measurement your curtain track needs to be.

2. Calculate how many curtain tracks you need

The curtain track is 140 cm long and can be both cut and extended.
Extend the curtain track by adding an extra track and connecting them with the included joint fitting.
Shorten the curtain track by simply cutting it to the desired length with a hacksaw.

Take the measurement you got in step 1 and divide it by 140, and you will get the answer for how many curtain tracks you need.

Example calculation:

The window is 190 cm.

The recommended length of the track is therefore 220 cm (190+15+15).Divide the total measurement by 140: 220/140 = 1.5.

Round up to the nearest whole number; in this case, 2.

So, 2 curtain tracks are needed, one of which will need to be cut.

Calculate how much needs to be cut from one of the rails:

Calculate the total length of both rails; 140x2=280 cm.

Here, only 220 cm is needed.

Calculate the difference between the two measurements; 280-220=60 cm.

Therefore, one of the rails needs to be reduced by 60 cm.

The cut rail will then be 80 cm. Together with a whole rail, it will be 140+80=220 cm.

Keep in mind:

If you are going to attach your curtain track to the wall, the wall bracket needs to be placed in the joint between the two tracks. If you want to place the wall bracket in the middle of your curtain track, you need to cut both tracks to the same length so that the joint also ends up in the middle. In the example above, you would then calculate 220/2=110 cm instead. So, both tracks need to be cut to 110 cm.

Take the measurement you came up with in step 1 and double it. Then divide that measurement by 140 to get the answer for how many rails you need.

Calculation example:

The window is 190 cm.

The recommended length of the rails is therefore 220 cm (190+15+15).

Double the measurement since two rails of the same length are needed here; 220x2=440 cm.

Divide the total measurement by 140; 440/140=3.1 pcs.

Round up to the nearest whole number if the figure is not even; in this case 4.

So, 4 curtain rails are needed here, two of which need to be cut.

Calculate how much needs to be cut off from two of the rails.

Calculate the total length of all the rails; 140x4=560 cm.

Only 440 cm are needed here.

Calculate the difference between the two measurements; 560-440=120 cm.

Divide that measurement by 2; 120/2=60 cm.

So, two of the rails need to be reduced by 60 cm each. The cut rails will then be 80 cm.

Together with a full rail, they will be 140+80=220 cm.

Keep in mind:

If you are going to attach your curtain rail to the wall, the wall bracket needs to be placed at the joint between the two rails. If you want to place the wall bracket in the middle of your curtain rails, you need to cut all the rails to the same length so that the joints also end up in the middle. In the example above, you would then calculate 440/4=110 cm. So all four rails need to be cut to 110 cm.

The VIDGA corner track lets you choose if you want the curtain to run around a corner. It can also be used at the ends of a track in a straight curtain setup to allow the curtain to close tightly against the wall, thereby reducing light leakage from the sides.

The corner strip extends 12 cm in each direction.

When you have calculated the total length your curtain track should be and want to include a corner track, you need to subtract 12 cm for each corner track from the total measurement of the curtain track.

Calculation example:

The curtain rail should be 140 cm and you want a corner rail on each side.

The length of the curtain rail should be a total of 140 cm.

The corner rail you want to add is 12 cm.

You want 2 corner rails: 12+12=24 cm.

Subtract 24 cm from the total length of the rail: 140-24=116.

So here the straight curtain rail needs to be cut to 116 cm. 116+12+12=140 cm.

During installation:

If you are attaching the VIDGA Corner to the ceiling, the connecting VIDGA Curtain Track with 1 groove should be mounted 12 cm out from the wall.

If you are attaching it to the wall, use the VIDGA Wall Bracket 12 cm.

3. Choose fittings

VIDGA curtain tracks can be mounted on both the ceiling and the wall.

For a single-layer curtain solution, you do not need to choose any additional fittings since 2 ceiling brackets are included with each curtain track.

For a two-layer curtain solution with two parallel curtain tracks on the ceiling, you choose ceiling brackets.

For a 140 cm curtain track, 2 ceiling brackets or ceiling mounts are sufficient.

If you join several curtain tracks in length, you need to use more ceiling brackets or ceiling mounts.

The maximum length before you need to add an extra ceiling bracket or ceiling mount is 140 cm.

When installing a curtain track on the ceiling:

Mount the ceiling brackets or ceiling console on the ceiling at least 5 cm away from the wall, depending on how close you want the curtain to hang (you may need to take into account, for example, a protruding windowsill or a radiator).

Keep in mind that the ceiling brackets or ceiling console should be positioned 5-20 cm onto the curtain track measured from the outer edges.

If you want to install two parallel curtain tracks on the ceiling without using the ceiling console, that is also possible.

In that case, we recommend a distance of about 8 cm between the two tracks. Please note that screws for mounting the ceiling brackets or ceiling consoles are not included.

If you want to mount your curtain rail on the wall, you need to choose wall brackets.

For a 140 cm curtain rail, 2 wall brackets are sufficient. If you join multiple curtain rails together, you need to add one wall bracket for each extra rail, even if it has been cut.

The maximum length before you need to add an extra wall bracket is 140 cm to ensure a stable installation.

When installing a curtain rail on the wall:

The wall brackets should be mounted so that the top is at least about 15 cm above the upper window frame.

If you want to mount the rail higher, you should keep in mind that the minimum distance between the top of the wall bracket and the ceiling should be at least 4 cm to be able to mount the curtain rail.

The wall bracket should always be attached at the joint if you have connected multiple rails.

Keep in mind that screws and plugs for mounting the wall brackets are not included.

4. Choose how you want to hang your curtains on the track

Hang your curtains on the small hooks for tight pleats in your curtain setup on the ceiling or wall.
One package contains 24 pieces. To give your curtain nice and even pleats, you need to use at least 12 pieces per curtain length.
For 2 curtain lengths, you need 1 package.

These are also called finger hooks. Hanging curtains with finger hooks gives a nice drape with wide and even folds for your curtain setup on the ceiling or wall.
They make the top edge of the curtain sit a bit higher, and then it also covers most of the curtain rail.
Complete with VIDGA glide and hook when you attach the finger hook to the loop.
One package contains 20 finger hooks. For your curtain to have nice and even folds, you need to use at least 12 hooks per curtain length.

Tips

How to make the room feel bigger with curtains

By using a curtain track that is longer than the window and allowing the curtains to cover more of the walls, both the window and the room feel larger.
If you attach the curtain track higher up on the wall or to the ceiling, the room's ceiling height will feel taller.
