Not compatible with older IKEA kitchen cabinetsWojciechQuite disappointed to only discover once bought and opened at home that these glass shelves are not compatible with the same size IKEA cabinets bought few years ago. Bought these as wanted some extra shelves, same 30cm size but actual size of these is about 2-3 mm wider than the IKEA glass shelves I have at the moment... and will not fit! Looks like at some point IKEA changed to smaller cabinet frame width making the inside shelves few mm wider with the same outside cabinet dimensions?! My older glass shelves are "Rationale" and although also for 30mm cabinet, these "Utrusta" will not fit. Be warned. Would have been nice if IKEA would make this clear and warn existing loyal customers. As it stands, to have an extra shelve, I would now need to buy a new cabinet. Nice one IKEA. Now I'm stuck with extra shelves I can't use and only option to get these custom made... so much for IKEA flexibility and compatibility.1

Misleading advertisingDiannaI think it was advertised falsely. The measurements were for the unit it was designed for and not the measurement of the glass, so it was smaller than what I actually wanted it for. It did the job but wasn't exactly what I wanted. It was too much hassle to return it.3

Material

What is glass?

Glass is mainly made of sand, soda and lime melted at a high temperature. Tempering or various additives gives you extra-strong and impact-resistant glass that in some cases can be taken straight from freezer to oven without cracking. A big benefit is how glass can be recycled over and over without the quality deteriorating. Also, a lot less energy is needed to melt recycled glass compared to new raw materials. Our goal is to eventually use only recycled glass in our range.

Quality

Withstands more than it has to

Our kitchens must withstand a lot. The shelf test is just one of our many quality controls. We load a 80 cm wide shelf with 27 kilos, for a full week. The shelf may not bend more than a few millimetres - that proves it can withstand demanding everyday use.
