Down and feathers are natural materials that sometimes have a slight smell. The smell is harmless and fades over time. Airing or washing , and drying it thoroughly in a dryer, helps the smell fade faster.

The worst pillow ever - it smells really bad Lee Anneas mentioned in other reviews the smell on this pillow is unbearable and the pillow is unusable. i've washed it and left it out to dry/air out for days, still a terrible smell. very disappointed. will not shop at ikea again, waited on hold for 1.5hr for some type of assistant then just gave up waiting to talk to someone. thanks ikea for wasting my time and money 1

Horrible smell after many washes very disappointed!GuillaumeWe usually enjoy shopping at IKEA, but these pillows have been a huge disappointment. After washing them and leaving them outside in the sun for several days, the smell is still unbearable. It’s so bad that it has made our outdoor area smell awful. We bought two pillows, and both have a terrible odour. It’s incredibly frustrating trying to get rid of the smell with no success. Since we made a long trip to IKEA North Lakes, returning isn’t an option for us at the moment. I’m really upset because the odour is so strong that it’s become a major issue, and we can’t use the pillows at all. Honestly, they don’t seem safe to use, as the smell is overpowering.1

How to care for your down/feather pillow

With a little care, you can prolong the life of your down/feather pillow and keep it fresh. The filling has a natural smell which can be reduced by airing or washing. Wash the pillow separately with a mild detergent (1/3 of the normal amount) on delicate cycle at 60°C. Avoid bleach/fabric softeners. Tumble dry immediately on low heat. A dryer ball or a high-quality tennis ball in the dryer make drying mor efficient. Air your pillow regularly, if possible, in direct sunlight.
