IKEA releases new playful cushion range in partnership with the Jordan River Foundation

Available in store and online, ÄNGSMÄTARE and MANDELPIL have been inspired by the pastel paintings of Swedish artist, Hilma af Klint. The cushions are embroidered by skilled artisans as part of IKEA’s work with the Jordan River Foundation, a non-profit, non-governmental organisation – providing support to artisans, Syrian refugee women and local women from Jordan.
Since 2017, IKEA has partnered with the Jordan River Foundation (JRF) to co-create and develop IKEA textile products with local and refugee women in Jordan. The mission of the partnership is to tackle the challenges of integration and create jobs for female artisans.
The priority was to come up with patterns that female artisans would enjoy working on. The simple, organic forms and embroidery are easy and fun to place around your home. In the case of the ÄNGSMÄTARE pattern, the embroidery around each of the circles is different on every cover. Along with their dreamy Hilman af Klint inspired motifs, what makes these covers special is the hand-embroidered initials of the artisans who made them.
Akanksha Deo, IKEA in-house designer says: “The initials on the cushion covers give a nice personal touch and allow the artisans to feel attached to what they do. And for the customer, it provides added value as it’s the signature of the woman who made it and now it’s in your home.”
