IKEA launches first flat-pack rattan armchair

In 1953, IKEA introduced the first flat-packed furniture to reduce both costs and damage rates during transportation. Since then, flat-pack, self-assembly products have become the solution to the transportation struggle and is the easiest way for customers to get their furniture items home.
Rattan furniture can help to create a warm and natural feel at home, however it is usually packed in high and bulky boxes which don’t fit easily into most cars.
“That’s why we teamed up with one of our suppliers in Indonesia, and developed SALNÖ, a curvy rattan armchair that fits in a flat package,” says Kristin Pfannenschmidt, product developer, IKEA of Sweden. “When developing the SALNÖ armchair, I wanted to find a good balance between machine-made and handmade. Every part of the chair is handmade to keep the natural beauty of rattan and the traditional craftsmanship, but with a new assembly solution and drillings made by customized machines we made it possible for easy assembly.”
SALNÖ armchair will available in Australia and Korea from November 2022 as a world-first trial for IKEA.
SALNÖ is on sale now for $199, with a special IKEA Family price offer of $149: SALNÖ Armchair, rattan - IKEA
