Every year, we ask tens of thousands of people to share their thoughts and feelings about where they live. Here’s a collection of what we’ve found over the last few years.
2022 Make yourself at home
Every year we speak to people all over the world to find out what life at home means. In 2022, we heard from over 37,000 people living in homes of all shapes and sizes across 37 countries.
We’ve been struck by the unique ways people live and discovered that when home shines with personality, life can feel a lot better for everyone living there.
During times of deep uncertainty, we continue to turn to home as a place of comfort and security. Our research shows that we’re more likely to feel good about home when it reflects our personality.
2021 Balance Starts at Home
A balanced approach to mental wellbeing helps us get the most out of life, and at IKEA we believe that starts at home. So, for the 2021 IKEA Life at Home Report, we asked tens of thousands of people around the world to tell us about their experiences in five key areas relating to mental wellbeing and the home.
After a challenging 12 months, in which 27% of people said their mental health had suffered, our homes and our mental wellbeing became more intimately connected than ever.
In fact, people now find it hard to talk about one without the other. Through our research, we learned that a home you love can help protect your mental wellbeing. But there’s a flipside. When people are unhappy at home, they’re more likely to experience negative mental health impacts.

2020 The Big Home Reboot
In 2020, life at home was unexpectedly and fundamentally disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic, affecting every aspect of people’s lives at home.
Against the turbulence of the outside world, 78% of us globally agreed that home was our sanctuary during the 2020 pandemic restrictions.
As a result, 2 in 5 made changes to our home. What does this tell us about how people want to live now, and about the future of life at home?
2019 The Power of Privacy
Privacy is one of the most important needs for creating the feeling of home, but one in four people, globally, find places other than their home better able to fulfil this need.
In 2019, 85% worldwide believed they had a right to have privacy in their own home. Having privacy may feel important, but isn’t always possible due to where we live, who we live with and what our roles in the home are.
And 70% said privacy is important to achieve time and space for activities that enable personal growth.
