Our membership with the ABSC
Getting a new mattress should feel good, for you and the planet. That’s why IKEA is proud to be a member of the Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC). Together, we’re working to keep old mattresses out of landfill and give their materials a new purpose.

What is the ABSC
Every year, around 1.8 million mattresses end up in landfills in Australia. The ABSC is here to change that.
They bring together retailers, recyclers, and manufacturers to make mattress recycling easier and more effective.
By joining the ABSC, IKEA is helping to create a circular economy – where less goes to waste, and more gets reused.
How it works with IKEA
- When you buy a new mattress from IKEA, you can add our mattress removal service.
- We’ll collect your old mattress and make sure it’s sent to an ABSC-approved recycler.
- This means your mattress is handled responsibly.
Why it matters
- Less waste: Fewer mattresses in landfill.More reuse:
- Materials like steel, foam, and fabric can be recycled.
- Better for everyone: A cleaner, more sustainable future
