Curious about the future of design at IKEA?
In an Australian first IKEA is bringing its world famous Democratic Design Days to Sydney. This August IKEA will be opening the doors to the big blue box to give Australians a behind the scene glimpse into the IKEA design and product development.

Democratic Design Days program will explore the future; the future of life at home in Australia and the future of IKEA.

During the Democratic Design Days IKEA will showcase new collections to come in 2019 and exhibit never before seen prototypes from collections currently in development. Guests will also have the opportunity to meet some of the creative leaders, designers and collaborators behind our most anticipated collections.

There are also a few exciting surprises to come over Democratic Design Days! Don’t miss a beat, check out the program.

Where?
We believe that great ideas will travel. From the birthplace of IKEA in Älmhult, Sweden to the iconic Sydney Harbour – IKEA HQ is relocating for a limited time. Hosted at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Democratic Design Days will be showcased in the Ballroom of the museum.

Marcus Engman
Head of Design, IKEA
Marcus Engman has been the head of design at IKEA since 2012 but his history with the home furnishing retailer goes way back. Born in 1966 and raised in Älmhult, Sweden – the small town where IKEA was founded - Engman spent his high school years working at the IKEA store.

During the mid-1980s, Engman was an apprentice to IKEA interior designer Mary Ekmark. Over a period of 12 years, he went on to other IKEA roles like communications & interior design manager, and global range strategist and marketing manager (retail) for IKEA in Sweden.

He then founded his own retail agency before taking on his current position as head of design.

Now he is at the forefront of creating and developing IKEA range and products, bringing beautiful and functional design to the many people.

Jan Gardberg
Country Manager, IKEA Australia
Formally the deputy country manager for IKEA in Russia, Mr Gardberg brings 32 years of international IKEA experience to the expanding IKEA business in Australia.

While on the executive team at IKEA Russia he was responsible for the businesses sustainability strategy, eCommerce rollout, distribution integration, food business and the retail operations for the 14 stores across the country.

Prior to this, his career has seen him in leadership positions across the IKEA retail, supply chain and product development businesses.

Tiffany Buckins
Tiffany Buckins
Head of Interior Design, IKEA Australia
Tiffany is a passionate home furnishing enthusiast and creative leader with over 26 years of experience in the visual merchandising and interior design field.

As a child, one of her career aspirations was to “inspire people” and her 15 years at IKEA have helped to turn that dream into reality. As the head of Interior Design for IKEA Australia she establishes the strategic direction to inspire and engage the many people in Australia to truly create a better everyday life at home.

Her aim is to design rewarding shopping experiences, stimulate visitation, conversion and repeat visits through presenting the IKEA product range in a meaningful, relevant and beautiful way across all IKEA touchpoints.

Tiffany is also an accredited coach through IECL, acts as a board member for IKEA Tempe, IKEA Adelaide and IKEA Perth stores and is a spokesperson for IKEA Australia, having appeared on various news segments including Sky News Real Estate, Sunrise and A Current Affair.

In addition to her home furnishing obsession and never-ending passion for developing people, Tiffany is also an avid scuba diver, cross fitter, cyclist and motorcyclist, animal lover, explorer and “what if” thinker.

Thea Brejzek
Dr Thea Brejzek
Professor for Spatial Theory, UTS
Dr Thea Brejzek is professor for Spatial Theory at the University of Technology Sydney, director of the Interior Architecture Program in the School of Design at UTS, and co-director of the Joint PhD program ‘Critical Spatial Thinking: Performative Practices and Narrative Spaces in Design’ in collaboration with TU Berlin.

She has a background in opera stage directing and theatre studies. From 2007 to 2012 she was a professor of Scenorgraphy at Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK), Switzerland. Thea publishes and lectures widely on the history and theory of scenography and performative environments with a particular interest in transdisciplinary practices and the politics of space in performance, and in 2011, was the founding curator for Theory at the Prague Quadrennial for Performance Design and Space (PQ).

Thea Brejzek is a member of the scientific advisory board of the Bauhaus Dessau and associate editor of the Routledge Journal, Theatre and Performance Design. She has been visiting professor at Bartlett School of Architecture, is a research fellow at TU Berlin and in 2017 has been awarded a Bogliasco Foundation Research Fellowship.

Tommy Ingemarsson
CEO, Area Academy
Tommy "Potti" Ingemarsson is the Chief Executive Officer of Area Academy, a gaming and tech company aimed at leading educational structures for e-sports based on the community and social work.

Ingemarsson started his career in e-sports almost 20 years ago. In 2000, he founded the gaming team Ninjas in Pyjamas, now one of the world’s biggest e-sports brands.

In 2004, Ingemarsson received the award for the world’s best player in Counter-Strike. After 48 e-sports medals, of which 10 are world championship medals, Ingemarsson moved to building the e-sports community by starting Area Academy.

Petter Sjostrand
Petter Sjöstrand
Administrative Manager, Area Academy
Petter Sjöstrand is the Administrative Manager at Area Academy, a gaming and tech company aimed at leading educational structures for e-sports based on community and social work. He uses his experience to lead projects and build Area Academy’s concepts and vision to consumers.

Sjöstrand has a big passion for gaming, IT and performance arts. He co-founded the University Star League, a university league in Starcraft II, where he took the roles of Creative Director and Content Manager for all streamed content.

For 5 years Sjöstrand also served as commentator and host for the Swedish public TV broadcasts in e-sports. Sjöstrand has been working as a project leader in IT and as an actor and director within the theatre.

Sebastian Wiberg
Educational Officer, Area Academy
Sebastian Wiberg is the Educational Officer at Area Academy, a gaming and tech company aimed at leading educational structures for e-sports based on the community and social work.

Wiberg has previous experience as a teacher with an expertise on using computer games as a pedagogic tool.

With a thesis on the usage of computer games in schools, many years of teaching experience as well as many years of gaming experience, Wiberg leads the development of the pedagogic constructs at Area Academy.

Andreas Fredriksson
Andreas Fredriksson
IKEA Designer
Andreas is an in-house designer with IKEA of Sweden, with a background in industrial design. Over the past seven years in the role, Andreas has had a hand in many iconic IKEA designs including the HAVSTEN outdoor sofa, which was awarded with the prestigious Red Dot Award: Product Design in 2017.

Recently Andreas has collaborated with the American electronics company Sonos, on SYMFONISK, a collection of wi-fi speakers designed to be beautifully and seamlessly integrated with home furnishings. Andreas is currently designing furniture made from natural fibre and will work on the upcoming collaboration between IKEA and Lego.

Customer Experience Manager, IKEA Australia
Cass Hall has nearly 20 years IKEA experience, having joined IKEA Australia as the Advertising Manager in 1999. Since then, Hall has lead Marketing for IKEA in both Canada and Australia, helping to position IKEA with a strong external voice.

Hall moved into eCommerce before transitioning into his current role where he manages the IKEA customer journey, putting the customer at the centre of the IKEA business and working to continually improve the shopping experience.

Matt Preston
Matt Preston is an award-winning food journalist and best-selling cookbook author. He is also the co-host and judge on one of the most-watched cooking shows in the world, “MasterChef Australia”

Matt writes a weekly column for delicious on Sunday read by 4million Australians every week. He is also a senior editor for delicious and taste magazines, and contributes to one of Australia’s best read website, www.taste.com.au with a monthly reach of 2million food lovers.

Preston has appeared as a judge in ten series of the ratings juggernaut MasterChef Australia, as well as one series each of Celebrity MasterChef, Junior MasterChef, MasterChef Allstars. With a total worldwide audience of over 180million, MasterChef Australia is the highest rating English speaking program in India with over 3 million viewers, making Matt a star on the sub-continent.

Preston has released 5 best-selling cook books with a 6th launching in November 2018. International Sales make up 20% of Matt’s total book sales. Matt is also a key social media influencer in Australia and internationally with a combined international social media reach of over 800,000 followers on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram

Sarah joined Foodbank Australia in October 2010 and since then has fulfilled a variety of roles as the organisation has grown including operations, marketing and fundraising. She came to Foodbank from a long career in the food industry focussing on supporting and promoting farmers and their products at Hort Innovation, Milk Marketing NSW and the National Dairy Council of England & Wales.

Foodbank is the largest food relief organisation is Australia which, with the help of national and local corporate partners around Australia, collects and redistributes over 37 million kilograms of food a year to front line charities.

Having represented some of the biggest brands in the world in her career from Netflix, Virgin, IKEA, Microsoft, Proctor & Gamble, Peroni and Coca-Cola to name a few, she is a seasoned operator in creative, communications strategy, issues and crisis management, media and influencer engagement and digital marketing.

Jacqui currently runs Australian consumer brand marketing agency, Pulse and leads a team of more than 35 people.

Fresh from Democratic Design Days in Sweden, the Exhibition will also showcase the first gaming chair prototype from the newly announced collaboration with UNYQ, daring revolutioniser of 3D printed medical wearables, and educational e-sport company Area Academy. For three nights only IKEA is bringing a touch of Sweden to Sydney Harbour with the first ever Donate by Plate Meatball Restaurant.

Inspired by the IKEA Museum meatball restaurant found in the hometown of IKEA in Älmhult, Sweden, the Donate by Plate pop-up will put a new spin on the iconic meatball meal, with all proceeds donated to Foodbank.

Our chefs have created a menu, using the IKEA meatballs, chickenballs and veggieballs, inspired by flavours from around the world.

For the first time in Australia we will give Sydney-siders a taste of our take on the new IKEA Salmon ball due to be released in 2019!

Enjoy a shared feast, alongside friends new and old, in our modern Scandinavian restaurant with the spectacular Sydney Harbour in the backdrop.

For one night only, IKEA and Sonos come together for the IKEA (dis)assembly party. With special guest DJ, join us for a wrap party with a twist. As our last hurrah for Democratic Design Days, we need your help to disassemble the party. All IKEA furniture in the venue will be up for grabs (yes, it’s free!) and all it takes is for you to snap and post your favourite IKEA products from the night for the chance to take it home.

Don’t worry, we won’t make you actually take it home that night - you can pick up your new beautiful furniture over the weekend. Plus, IKEA will be serving a complimentary Swedish-inspired IKEA cocktail alongside small plates of our iconic meatballs.
