You can easily aim the light where you need it because the lamp head is adjustable. For instance, you can direct the light on the book you are reading, use it as an uplight or aim it to focus on a specific area in the room.

Quality of Hektar lamps keeps decreasingDariaWe have 6 different types of Hektar lamps, none purchased in the last three years. We recently got two Hektar spotlights. Oh my, has the quality fallen.
The two lateral screws that fix the lamp head in place after you position it as desired, and their respective washers, are made of low grade plastic, badly. They come tightened, and the low quality of the plastic and poor execution make it so that they're easily over-tightened, thus deform and over time get "baked" into the neck of the shade.
Once you manage to loosen up a screw enough to be able to move and position the head (took a very long time even with pliers), it won't be possible to tighten it back enough for the head to stay permanently fixed in position.
One of the two spotlights came assembled missing one of the screws' washers and hyper-tightened - the screw was baked onto the neck so badly that after it finally loosened up it was later impossible to screw it back enough to not have the head slip out of position.
Don't order the recommended light bulbs!!GillianLamp needs a E17 base, not the recommended E12 that is shown on the website.
Ikea, please update the website to the correct specifications.
Trying to get the bulbs exchanged was an exercise in futility, wasted one hour on the phone for a $2.99 article.
Lamp looks nice though, can't wait to see it actually light up.

Great light, easy to installJamieThe light is very nice, clean looking and is easy to put up on the wall. We have them on either side of our bed for reading. My only complaint is that Ikea could have dimmer bulbs for them - there really is only one option.

The Hektar, wall mountable as well as clampstyle.CarlaThe Hektar was an excellent choice for a simple wall light to create an eclectic warmth. I chose a dark grey in rough matt finish and with its long cord to reach outlets.
I choose the wall mount for a totally different look to the clamp on also love the needed light bulb is located with these LPS to make the choice of light bulb easy.

Looks great but two have brokenTinaThese look great but the price is a little too low as the two bought for my boys’ bunkbeds are both inoperable in two years. I don’t think it’s sustainable to toss lamps every two years. Quality really going downhill Ikea. $40 and holes in the wall is pretty expensive for garbage. Now I need to find them other lamps as I won’t buy these again.

Tried both, and both ways work well. Remember to also buy bulb!
