What essential measuring and mixing tools should every kitchen have?

Should you follow your heart or the recipe? For chef-quality results, you’ll need the right mixing and measuring tools. Measuring cups and spoons are essential for accurate results with dry ingredients, while liquid measuring cups make pouring easy and precise.

Once your ingredients are measured out, choose the right mixing tool to bring it all together. Mixing bowls in different sizes give you flexibility when cooking for a crowd or yourself. Choose one with a spout to easily pour batter and a rubber base to avoid spills. With the right mixing and measuring tools, cooking and baking is simpler – and a lot more fun.

What’s the difference between dry and liquid measuring cups?

While they might seem similar, dry and liquid measuring cups are designed for different tasks. Dry measuring cups let you scoop and fill to the top, leveling ingredients like flour or sugar for precise baking. All it takes is a little too much flour to turn cookies into a catastrophe!

Liquid measuring cups usually come with a spout and are made for pouring liquids without spilling. Using a dry measuring cup for liquid can technically work – but you risk spills and an inaccurate recipe.

How to fill measuring tools

Think your measuring tools double as a scoop? Think again! For dry ingredients like flour or sugar, spoon into the measuring cup and level off with a knife or your finger. This avoids over-measuring. Sometimes your recipe will call for “packed” ingredients, like brown sugar. This means pressing it firmly into the measuring cup until it holds it shape when turned out. For liquid measuring cups, always place on a flat surface and check at eye level.

Should you use a scale instead of measuring cups?

If you want to level up your baking, a kitchen scale is an essential measuring tool to have. Measuring cups are convenient for everyday cooking, but differences in how ingredients are packed can influence your final product. Measuring by weight gives you more consistent results, so every bake feels like a win.
