Queen size mattresses lead the sleepy charge

Measuring 60” wide x 80” long, the queen mattress lives up to its name as the ruler of the mattress kingdom—or the most popular size. A step up in length and width from a full mattress, queen mattresses give solo sleepers ample room to spread out—even if a pet or two join in on the fun! They also let couples sleep comfortably next to each other without feeling like they can’t move without disrupting their partner.

Queen mattress space considerations

With so many reasons to love queen size mattresses, you might be wondering why anyone wouldn’t choose one! In our experience—among folks who lean toward queens, but ultimately purchase a full mattress or king mattress—the choice largely comes down to the size of their bedroom and how long they plan to live in their current home.

If you’re a renter who has room for a queen mattress now but want to future-proof your purchase, consider how likely you are to also have enough room in your next apartment. If bedrooms tend to be tiny where you live and you move fairly frequently, consider that a full size mattress will be easier to work into small bedroom layouts while still sleeping two comfortably in most cases

On the flipside, if you plan to live in your current home long-term and have a very large bedroom, a king sized mattress might be a better fit. In very spacious bedrooms, even queen size mattresses can feel dwarfed by the sheer square footage. The extra 16” of width a king offers compared to a queen helps your bed feel appropriately sized for the space
