Savings of 772€ per year

A research by DECO PROteste made for IKEA from December 2025 to April 2026 shows that a Portuguese household of three can save more than 770€ a year by using products that make it possible to save energy and water, avoid food waste and cut down on the use of disposables.

Every little thing counts, so we're giving you some ideas for getting started. Are you in?

How to save energy at home

Energy is usually a major expense for every household. Fortunately, there are simple things you can do to use energy more efficiently.

You can save 187€ per year on energy by using more efficient equipment, such as light bulbs, hobs and ovens, and using appropriate textiles for better insulation and comfort.

This reduction in power consumption corresponds to a reduction in CO2 emissions of 178 kg per year.

How to use less and reuse more

There’s often a reusable alternative for lots of disposable products. And this alternative can also be more economical and generate less waste.

You can save 204€ per year by avoiding disposables and choosing reusable alternatives for shopping bags and water bottles. At the end of the year, 15 kg of plastic waste will have been avoided.

How to manage waste at home

Food waste is a reality. In Portugal, 122 kg of food per person is wasted at home every year, with around 12% of this waste coming from leftover meals.

By storing leftovers in suitable containers and in the right place, you could save 74€ a year and prevent around 44 kg of food from going to waste.

Extend the life of your sofa

Choosing a sofa with removable covers can save you money on cleaning and reduce resource consumption over time.

You could save 89€ a year by washing the covers at home instead of having a sofa without removable covers professionally cleaned.

A sofa with removable covers could last 15 years, with the covers replaced every 5 years, compared with 12 years for a sofa with fixed covers. That means 71 kg less waste generated.
