How to buy a VIDGA curtain track: in 4 steps

Learn how to measure and calculate the number of VIDGA tracks needed for your solution, whether it's a single or multi-piece curtain, to ensure you have everything you need.

  1. Measure the window.
  2. Calculate the number of tracks needed.
  3. Choose the right hardware for your ceiling or wall.
  4. Choose how you want to hang the curtains.

1. Measure the window

How to calculate track length:

  • Measure the width of the window.
  • Add at least 15cm to each side. This extra length is intended to achieve a more aesthetic result, as it allows the curtains to conceal the window frame.
  • This will be the total length your track should be.

2. Calculate the number oftracks needed

  • The VIDGA track is 140cm long and can be cut or extended as needed.
  • Extend the track by adding an additional track and joining both with the supplied joining accessory.
  • Reduce the length of the track by cutting it to the desired length with a hacksaw or angle grinder.

Curtain track for a set of curtains: how to calculate it?

Take the measurements as described in step 1 and divide them by 140 to calculate the number of tracks needed.

Example calculation:
The window measures 190cm.

  • Therefore, the recommended length for the track is 220cm  (190+15+15).
  • Divide the total by 140: 220/140=1.5.
  • Round up to the nearest whole number, in this case, 2.
  • Two tracks are needed, one of which has to be cut.

Calculate the length to be cut from one of the tracks:

  • Calculate the combined length of both tracks: 140 x 2 = 280 cm.
  • In this case, the tracks only need to be 220cm wide.
  • Calculate the difference between the two measurements: 280-220=60cm.
  • Therefore, you have to remove 60cm from one of the tracks.
  • The cut track will then be 80cm long. Together, the tracks will have a total length of 140 + 80 = 220cm.

Important!

If you are attaching a track to the wall, the wall hardware will need to be placed at the junction of the two tracks . If you want to place the wall hardware in the center of the track, you will need to cut both tracks to the same length so that the junction is also centered. In the example above, we calculated 220/2=110cm. Therefore, both tracks have to be cut to 110cm.

Curtain track for two sets of curtains: how to calculate?

Take the measurements as per step 1, multiply by 2*, and divide the result by 140 to calculate the number of tracks needed.

Even if you are using a curtain set, use a single track set (a single rail). Triple track sets are only used for panels.

Example calculation:
The window measures 190cm.

  • Therefore, the recommended length for the tracks is 220cm (190+15+15).
  • Multiply the result by 2, since two tracks of equal length are needed: 220 x 2 = 440 cm.
  • Divide the total by 140 : 440/140=3.1.
  • If the result is odd, round up to the nearest whole number, in this case, 4.
  • Four tracks are needed , two of which have to be cut.

Calculate what you need to cut from two of the tracks.

  • Calculate the total length of the tracks: 140 x 4 = 560 cm.
  • In this case, the tracks only need to be 440cm wide.
  • Calculate the difference between the two measurements: 560 - 440 = 120 cm.
  • Divide the result by 2: 120/2=60cm.
  • Therefore, 60cm must be cut from two of the tracks.
  • The cut tracks will then be 80cm long. Together, the tracks will have a total length of 140 + 80 = 220cm.

Important!

If you are attaching a track to the wall, the wall hardware will need to be placed at the junction of the two tracks. If you want to place the wall hardware in the center of the channels, you will need to cut all the channels to the same length so that the junction is also in the center. In the example above, we calculated 440/4=110cm. Therefore, all four channels have to be cut to 110cm.

Corner track: how to calculate them?

The VIDGA corner accessory can be used if you want the curtain to run in a corner. It can also be used at the ends of a track in a straight curtain solution to allow the curtain to sit closer to the wall to reduce light entering from the sides.

The corner accessory measures 12cm in each direction.

After calculating the total length of your track, if you want to include the corner fitting, you will have to subtract 12cm from the horizontal dimension of the track, corresponding to each corner fitting.

Example calculation:
The track needs to be 140cm long and you want to include a corner fitting on both sides.

  • The track should have a total length of 140cm.
  • The corner accessory you want to add is 12cm.
  • Do you want to add 2 corner accessories? 12+12= 24cm.
  • Subtract 24cm from the total dimensions of the track: 140-24=116.
  • In this case, the straight track needs to be cut to be 116cm long.
  • 116+12+12=140cm.

During assembly:

  • If you are attaching VIDGA corner fittings to the ceiling, the VIDGA single channel should be installed 12cm away from the wall.
  • If you want to mount it on the wall, use the 12cm VIDGA wall hardware.

3. Choose the hardware

VIDGA hardware allows you to hang curtains from the ceiling for better light blocking or on the wall to create discreet and functional solutions in any space.

Ceiling track installation: it's good to know

  • If you choose ceiling mounting, you don't need any additional hardware: each track comes with 2 ceiling brackets.
  • For a ceiling-mounted solution for 2-tier curtains with parallel tracks, use ceiling brackets. These brackets provide enough space between the two tracks for the curtains to slide easily.
  • For a 140cm track, 2 ceiling brackets are sufficient.
  • If you connect multiple cable trays, you will need more ceiling brackets. You can add up to 140cm without needing additional hardware.

During assembly:

  • Attach the ceiling brackets at a distance of between 5 and 20 cm from the wall, depending on the distance from the wall where you want to hang the curtain (for example, you may have to consider any windowsill or radiator that may be present).
  • If installing two tracks in parallel without ceiling brackets, we recommend a distance of 8cm between the tracks.

Wall track installation: it's good to know

  • If you want to mount the track on the wall, you will have to choose wall hardware.
  • For a 140cm track, 2 wall fittings are sufficient.
  • If you cut multiple tracks together, you will need to add wall hardware for each additional track , even if it was cut. The maximum length without having to add extra wall hardware is 140cm.

During assembly :

  • The wall hardware should be fixed so that the top is at least 15cm above the window frame.
  • If you want the track to be closer to the ceiling, keep in mind that the minimum distance between the top of the wall hardware and the ceiling must be 4cm to allow for track installation.
  • If you've joined several tracks together, the wall hardware must always be attached to the joint .

Tip!

Choose the 6cm wall hardware if you have a layer of curtains and intend to hang them close to the wall.

Choose the 12cm wall hardware if you have two layers of curtains. You can also choose this option if you only have one set of curtains and want them to be slightly away from the wall, in case the window has a windowsill or other element that needs to be considered.

4. Choose how you want to hang your curtains

  • Hang the curtains on the small hooks to create a tight gather.
  • Each package contains 24 hooks. For your curtain to have a beautiful and uniform gather, you need to use at least 16 hooks per curtain length.
  • Two packages are enough for three curtains.
  • These  hooks allow the curtains to drape beautifully, creating a wide and even gather.
  • They cause the top edge of the curtain to be slightly higher and cover most of the track.
  • Finish by attaching the VIDGA slide and hooks to the rings.
  • Each package contains 20 hooks. For your curtain to have a beautiful and uniform gather, you need to use at least 16 hooks per curtain length.
  • If you need two curtain lengths, you will need two packages.
