Washing a vacuum flask before first use

It is always advisable to wash your vacuum flask before you use it for the first time. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for washing. It is generally recommended to clean a flask with a flask brush and dishwashing liquid. A flask that has been left unused for some time should be thoroughly washed before use.

Vacuum flask for hot as well as cold

A vacuum flask is designed to hold its contents within vacuum insulated walls. So, it keeps hot contents hot and keeps cold contents cold.

The science behind vacuum flask design

A vacuum flask is designed to create a layer of vacuum between two layers of glass or metal. Heat can be transferred by radiation, convection and conduction. The silver colour of the inner layer ensures no radiation loss. The vacuum layer prevents the transfer of heat by convection or conduction. This insulation keeps the temperature of the contents of the flask unchanged. The less the conduction to the outer room temperature, the better its insulation

Uses of vacuum technology

The technology used in vacuum flasks helps keep hot items hot. A hot mug of coffee can be enjoyed even when one is on the move or travelling. A cold drink is kept cool by the vacuum flask. It is helpful to preserve food or liquids at a stable temperature. The same technology is used in food containers such as the EFTERFRÅGAD food vacuum flask to keep food hot or cold. This vacuum flask technology is also used in medicine, aircraft instrumentation and many other applications that require temperature insulation.

Vacuum flask tips

  • Always wash the flask before the first use.
  • If using the flask to keep a liquid hot, first pre-fill the flask with hot water for a couple of minutes. Empty the flask and then fill it with the desired hot liquid.
  • If using the flask to keep a cold liquid cold, first pre-fill the flask with cold or chilled water for a couple of minutes. Empty the flask and then fill it with the desired cold liquid. This helps maintain the content’s temperature longer.
  • Wash and use the flask precisely as per the manufacturer’s instructions
  • Do not put the flask on any heating device or in a microwave to preheat.
  • Ensure that you clean the flask well before use if it hasn’t been used for some time. Proper maintenance and hygiene will prevent bacterial contamination of the flask’s contents.

How long does a flask keep its contents hot/cold?

A typical daily use flask would keep its contents either hot or cold for around 6 hours. A flask that does not require its lid to be removed entirely will keep its contents warmer/cooler after pouring. A preconditioned flask with hot water stored in it and poured out before being filled will keep its contents hotter. The same principle works for cold items by using cold water in the flask and emptied before filling it with cold contents.
