How to get it

The unique rod is like a wand that magically positions the blind exactly where you want it. The block-out coating prevents all light from coming in – so you can enjoy sleeping in late in the morning.

Block-out blinds blocks light from shining through and completely darkens your room.

Can be cut to the desired width.

The blind can be cut and re-cut to fit a smaller window. Ensure that you do not exceed maximum cut length.

The blind is cordless for increased child safety.

Can be mounted inside or outside the window recess, or in the ceiling.

This blinds fabric is made of polyester from recycled PET bottles. Using waste as a resource takes us one step closer to a more sustainable future.

Worked for a full Four DaysVerified ReviewerBought this rollerblind for a window 185cm in length. It's quite heavy, so I had to use heavy duty plasterboard fixings instead of the self-tapping screws that used to hold the very sheer curtain the blind replaced. But then it was easy to assemble, easy to operate, and it 100% blocks all light. But then, after 5 days, everytime I pull the blind down using the magic rod, it goes up on it's own. The only way to make it stay down is to put more extra weight in it. I attempted to get some advice from Ikea but the assistants all point me to the £35 taskrabbit handymen, which is more expensive than the rollerblind itself. Uncool, Ikea.3

Poor mechanism, NOT RECCOMENDED.Verified ReviewerThe only reason I'm giving the product two stars is that technically speaking the material used blocks out the light. The blind will only work fitted in one direction otherwise the arm will roll down under its own weight. We mounted like any other human being would properly using wall plugs but because you literally put strain on the wall fixture every time you move the arm up or down to open and close the blind, they've come off the wall multiple times including onto my head, thankfully not my son's. Don't buy them unless after attaching to the wall you are literally going to leave them closed forever.2
Nice blind with good mechanismVerified ReviewerI bought two 120cm and one 180cm blinds. I really like the "wand" type control. It's better than having a cord dangling down. It can only be fitted on the right hand side though unless you are willing to modify the blind which would be tricky. The light blocking is effective making it ideal for the bedroom. My blinds are fitted in different rooms so although it isn't a problem for me; there is a colour mismatch between the wider blind compared to the other two. There appears to be a batch number on each blind but all the wider blinds in the store had a different number to the other two. If the blinds were fitted together the difference in colour would be noticible. It's worth checking for colour and batch number when buying.5

Blind is nice but there is a big mistake in the instructions!Verified ReviewerBeware if adjusting the blind to fit within the blind within the window cutout (page 22 onwards). The instructions clearly show you should measure the available space and use this measurement to cut the fabric - if you do this, it will be far too big and you will need to repeat all of your work a second time to make it smaller still. I found I needed to remove a further 3cm.3

Spring had to be tensionedVerified ReviewerAfter I cut it to size and placed it in the recessed window the blind kept falling down. After some research the spring on the left side need to be tensioned and was actually the wrong way around. I used a large flathead screwdriver and pushed in the plastic crosshead turning it clockwise. I tried it again, still not right. A few more turns and it was perfect. Amazingly effortless to open and close and stays where it should e.g. halfway up etc. Overall a bit of a faff but a great bit of kit and very reasonable.5

Story

Why we hide the cord in FRIDANS

Children are curious and love to investigate things. These character traits also mean we have to be aware of safety when we decorate our homes. Accessible cords on traditional blinds have been known to cause accidents with children. That’s why we developed FRIDANS block-out roller blind. It has a rod that you use to adjust the blind – a safe solution for children, and functional for all ages.

In 2014, we got an invitation, along with other manufacturers of blinds, to meet with the Consumer Product Safety Commission – a governmental agency in the United States. They wanted to discuss how to prevent accidents with blinds that have accessible cords, and what possibilities there were to create something better. One of our Product Engineers, Bo Zhang, remembers it well. “We decided to immediately stop selling blinds with cords and only sell cordless ones.”

New solution but the same function

The decision meant some frustrated customers who wondered where the traditional blinds had gone. But it also meant that change was on the way. Bo and the team tried several different solutions until they came up with one that provided the same functionality as blinds with visible cords. “We realised we could keep the cord, but hide it,” he explains. The cord is inside a plastic rod that’s expandable and reinforced with strong glass fibre. When you pull it, you adjust the blind. “It’s safe, exact, and still at a low price,” says Bo proudly. The rod has not only been tested by our own lab, but also independent test labs. In addition, customers have checked the functionality. “By involving different people and organisations, we’ve made sure FRIDANS and the rod can meet the toughest demands – in every market,” says Bo. “The rod allows parents to create a safer environment for the youngest family members. When you live with children, that’s one important part of a better life at home,” he finishes.
