How do I claim a VAT refund?

If you are purchasing goods from IKEA for export outside the UK, you may be entitled to a VAT refund if you are either a non- UK resident or registered for VAT in a country outside the UK.

Please be aware that as of the 1st of January 2021, customers who are visitors to the UK will no longer be able to make VAT Refund claims when they are transporting their goods out of the UK with them in their luggage (Tax-free shopping). There is no change to customers who export the goods using a third party shipping service. More details can be found here.

Tax-free shopping is still available in Northern Ireland. Any customers visiting Northern Ireland may also be able to claim tax back on goods, which can be claimed as a VAT refund when they leave Northern Ireland or the EU. More information can be found here.

We can also offer VAT refund on certain bathroom products on the grounds of disability, provided specific conditions are met. More information can be found here

To make a VAT Refund claim or if you have any questions relating to the repayment of VAT, please contact our VAT Refund team by email. ([email protected]) with the following details. For exports, then by force of law you must do this within 3 months of purchase.

  • Order confirmation or receipt.
  • Utility bill for the address outside of the UK.
  • Certification of shipment.
  • Your contact details, including phone number, full name and full address.

For more general information, please refer to the VAT refund guidance on the HMRC website.
