Create a spa-feeling with bamboo
At IKEA, we have learned a lot about life at home over the years, and one thing we’ve realised is that many think it’s easier to throw dirty clothes and damp towels on the floor instead of using a laundry basket. That’s why the SALUDING laundry basket, weaved in a traditional Vietnamese style, has a lid with a hole. “An example of how to combine form and function – hopefully it can contribute to fewer towels on the floor but also a spa-feeling in your own home”, says Nike. When it’s time to do the laundry, you lift the lid and take out the inner bag – the laundry basket itself can stay where it is – as a decorative detail for any room.
A meeting between form and function
“With the right knowledge and expertise, bamboo can be manoeuvred, bent and folded into amazing objects”, says IKEA designer Nike Karlsson. And since it’s a nature fibre, each product gets small colour variations and a unique expression. “It’s tactile, and the shifts can contribute to warmth in almost any room, an excellent material if you want to bring in a little nature into your home.”

What is bamboo?
Strong, flexible and one of the world's fastest growing plants – bamboo has many uses that make it an excellent renewable material. It’s a type of grass and usually grows without the need for fertilizers or irrigation. After being harvested, it grows new shoots that are ready for harvesting after 4-6 years. At IKEA we use bamboo for items like furniture, bathroom decor, baskets and lamps – and we are constantly exploring more areas of use for this versatile material.
