Great simple systemMarcBeen using IVAR for over 30 years, its functional, nice variety of pieces in the set, stable and expandable all the things you'd need in a shelving system5
Never enoughGabrielaLove the shelves- i use them in my brick and mortar store- never have enough5
Disposable shelvesAshleyThe new design is such garbage that you can’t even reposition a shelf without it breaking. I had to take a whole wall of shelves down and was left with only a few that didn’t break. What am I supposed to do with all of these busted shelves?! I certainly won’t be purchasing replacements. Really disappointed bc I used to love ikea. 1
Just what was needed.SallyJust needed more shelves for the Ivar shelving unit.5
Quality of ivar system is going down.KariI've been purchasing the ivar system since 2018 (perhaps earlier) and with the change to the shelves (metal end brackets vs. the OG plastic ones) the quality is just not there. The metal brackets constantly come out when I'm moving shelves around. Forcing me to screw them into place. Never had that issue with the original design. Pegs are extremely difficult to remove from the metal brackets as well. The review is not for the side brackets, but I will comment on that as well... Those now come unassembled.... which is annoying. It should also come with earplugs because that piece destroys your eardrums trying to assemble it. Ikea i love that you are trying to improve your products but I feel like there are too many corners being cut and you are cheapening your product to save a buck.2
Read latest reviews, quality became unacceptableDimitriAs others recently mentioned, the quality went down so bad that you may be lucky to pick yourself few acceptable shelfs out of 100 in store in person. Otherwise don't even consider this product.1
Quality has gone down.KariI started buying these units back in 2016 or 2017. In the last 2 years, they started using metal for the brackets… it’s garbage. They are constantly falling out and I have to screw them back in place. The original design was MUCH better. Never had a single issue until they made that change.2
Extra shelf for IVAR cabinetMarliesI ordered this shelf to add to the shelving cabinet. It does not fit. It is too big.
The shelf itself is good, just not right for the IVAR cabinet.3
Sturdy and long wearingMaryMy oldest Ivar products are over 15 yrs old. These shelves with the covered full wood and metal connectors (unlike the old version with gray plastic) look excellent. Because Ivar is lightweight (unlike composite board) this product line allowed me to organize and beautify my home within budget over time, without assistance. I wish Ikea considered that many people live without large families to help haul heavy items and can’t always afford to pay for assistance.5
Horrible redesign. Still worth buyingMarkThe previous design used hard plastic brackets at the shelf ends. The new design is metal, which sounds better but isn't. Unlike the plastic version, the shelves are easily ruined—the metal brackets pop out of the wood at the slightest provocation and they cannot be repaired. They are also much much more difficult to customize if you need shorter shelves.
When you first get the shelves the metal pins are snapped into the metal brackets instead of being supplied in a plastic bag. They have to be pried out, and if you are not careful this process can easily pull the bracket out of the wood and ruin the shelf.
The shelves can also be ruined if you allow the shelving to collapse sideways into a parallelogram shape while assembling—two people highly recommended for assembly.
And finally, if you decide to rearrange the shelves, you have to get a really good grip on both the metal and the wood when popping the shelf off the pins, or, yes, you will ruin the shelves.3
an old friendJohnI appreciate that the IVAR line continues to be available. I initially purchased IVAR components several years ago and have purchased additional components multiple times since then in order to expand my storage capacity.5
Did not fulfill orderChristinaI only received shelves for the Ivar system, not the bulk of the unit. Very disappointed!!1
IvarRobertI love our ivar shelving units. They are easy to assemble and can be easily rearranged for our needs.5
Use a skinny flathead screwdriver to remove the shelves.BetsyI bought a set of IVAR shelves last month with some apprehension. I thought the shelves would be too hard to rearrange once set after reading many of these reviews. However, it's really not that hard it turns out--you just use the same flathead screwdriver that you would use to remove the pegs from their storage spot in the shelf's bracket when you first bring it home to pry the pegs out of the bracket ends to release the shelf. Then you can move the shelf to a different set of holes, easy-peasy! No brute strength or risk of damage/separation of the brackets from the shelves to speak of. As for the shelves themselves, it was more difficult than I would have liked to find shelves that were not too knotty as to be, in my opinion, unsightly, but at $5 and $10 per shelf, that's okay! Will stain them later so it's less noticeable. IVAR hooks and accessories can still sometimes be found on ebay. Ikea, bring back the IVAR clothing rod you used to sell, please!5

Great productAndreaGreat product, very functional5
It is a excellent product bought already 40 years ago in GermanyRenateExcellent 5
Best stuff everBryanWe love ivar. We have multiple sets all together in our basement, bedrooms and laundry room. All of the different style shelves work well and it is so versatile. I hope they never stop making it and that they bring back the corner shelves. 5
Metal fittings warpedVickyI bought an additional shelf for my system. The one I received has warped metal fitting so that it doesn't clip onto the metal peg. So this shelf doesn't shelf1
I wasted $1,000+VerityApproximately three years ago, I bought about 100 shelves and the uprights to go with them. These shelves have metal ends, unlike the ones from the 90s. I didn't like that they were hard to push onto the pegs, unlike the earlier version, but I figured I could live with it.
Then I tried to rearrange them. Every single shelf left its ends on the pegs- every single one. I had to hammer on the metal pieces to get them off of the pegs. It had been more than a year, the return window had closed and I had to make them work so I pushed the ends into the holes in the wood and, with difficultyinstalled them. But because I rearrange often the holes have become enlarged and the metal won’t stay attached to the wood at all, they provide no support to the shelf. I now have about 15 shelves that are just pieces of wood, not shelves and I know it will eventually happen to every other one.
I have never been as unhappy with a product as I am with these. 1
