Reviews

Not a good sofaMatthewNot satisfied with this purchase at all . We returned it. couch is too firm, the pull out portion kept coming off its hinges, lack of overall quality and comfort. Over priced for what it is. 1
FRIHETEN sofa chaise armrestEgorI really love how the design and the color of the sofa and also that it can be converted into a bed very easy when my friends stay overnight. Unfortunately, the armrest along the chaise section of the sofa broke very quickly and began to wobble (after less than a year use) even though I tightened and checked all the connections several times.3
Looks good until you buy it! AdrianaDon’t get me wrong we loved the sofa until we started noticing some defects: 1) the sliding bed sometimes gets derailed and 2) the most important for me, sofa gets weird decoloration in the seating area through the whole sofa (olive kind - darker shades) when I called Ikea (thinking the store would care about it) they just claimed it was a customer issue not theirs. I got as first response that maybe my sofa was next to a window so that could cause it, then I got a customer service called saying maybe my kids went in the pool and sat on it later and overall ridiculous excuses to just end my ticket claim with: covers are not part of our warranty. Ikea is not being liable to this and per other reviews they had this issue in previous customers. 1
Best Sleeper EverThorstenMy son and I had this sleeper sofa for 7 years. Some other reviewers complain that it comes apart...but that has not been our experience...and we make and unmake this bed multiple times a week (and host 4 boy pre-teen sleepovers on it, frequently). I'm sure we've made and unmade this bed over 1000 times by now. Transforming it from Sofa to Bed takes LITERALLY less than a minute...and my 12 year old can do it all by himself. But here's the real trick: GET A SKINNY MATTRESS PAD (less than $100 when we got it in 2016) and store that folded like a tri-fold brochure in the box. That extra layer evens out the seams and makes this little sleeper couch as comfy as any mattress I have ever slept on. In fact, if ours ever breaks, I hope IKEA still makes it. I'd get another one right away. 5
ehhMariahPurchased the couch which is functional for a small space however, the material is starting to get lent balls on it and i’ve only had it for 6-8 months. I also have problems using the pull out part. It just doesn’t stay hooked so i can’t use it as a bed.2
Great sleeper, worst for pet hairKrisinLove the sofa itself, it's comfy and the extra storage is useful, but we have 3 cats and the fur is constantly worked into the fabric and difficult to vacuum out. I wish we had gotten a different fabric finish.3
It's not a luxury, but it's perfect for the price!PaigeThis couch is lovely, it's got the perfect amount of storage, and the lounge is terrific to get comfy on. It's a little firm at first, but I liked it because I know it isn't going to get super flat in the long run. The pullout feature is just the same as what I've already described, but for fair warning: if you want to put a rug down in front of the couch either for decorative purposes or because you have hardwood floors (like me), don't unless it's large enough to go underneath the entire couch. The rug (which is also from IKEA, though, standard thickness) lifts the pullout just enough to become loose from the hooks that stop the pullout from pulling away from the couch completely. It took a couple of weeks for me to understand this was the reason and I was very worried it was the couch's fault. Now that I've removed the rug, the couch works just as promised.4
FRIHETEN Sleeper sofaNelfyI bought this sleeper sofa and I am so sorry, I will return it, cheap materials, horrible finishes, it is a rock, it is extra firm, it is not comfortable at all. The one they put in the store looks different, 899 + taxes is too much money, it should cost 500 USD, it is very average in everything. I regret losing money on deliveries and wasted time.1
Good Sofa for the priceLindaOverall we like this sofa. My husband and 7 year old assembled it, although time consuming, they didn't have issues. They did need an electric screwdriver for one part. It is a firmer mattress and given the couch construction possible but hard to add a mattress topper on as not a lot of room to put a sheet and mattress topper with pieces that go around mattress in between couch and mattress. The bottom part that makes it a bed does easily come out and from the hooks at bottom, but it isn't hard to put back in, wish it didn't come out. We have only had it a few weeks, but slept on it a few times and are happy.4
Do not buy until you've tried it in the storeAnneliI live in an efficiency, so this is an economical use of space. As a sofa, the comfort is acceptable, at best. As a bed, it's terrible. Each piece that makes the bed area has a wooden box frame - the trundle, the sofa, and the chaise, and there's not much padding between the wood a person. The only thing that makes this work for me is using a memory foam mattress as a very high back of the long side of the sofa, and I pull it down like a Murphy bed for sleeping. Eight inches thick is ideal for the sofa back, or else the seating gets shallow. I upgraded to a ten inch mattress, so sleeping on the sofa is no longer an option. The lack of a raised arm on the end of the sofa makes it compatible as a Murphy bed. The linen is horrendous. It attracts all the dirt, and water spots are a fact of life with this piece. I'd sooner modify and repair my current piece than replace it at the current price, too.3
Love it in theory, but has some issuesMollyI searched for a corner couch for a loooooong time, and finally decided on the Friheten Sleeper Sectional in Hyllie Beige. The dimensions are perfect for my small living room corner. The Hyllie Beige is a nice fabric, but does pill. I use a sweater pill shaver on the couch once a month and it looks good as "new". My main issue with this couch is that the storage chaise cushion drops when it is sat on. It falls off the base and slumps into the back corner of the storage space. It pops back into place when we open the top. We are going back and forth on returning the couch, but may add additional support under the cushion so it doesn't drop in.3
Love this sofaVanessaPut this sofa in our den and it's perfect for when guests come as a bed and I occasionally sit on it to watch tv. I had the original one years ago. They changed the fabric and made it a bit more cushy but it's still considered a stiff seat. I don't ever feel hot on it (I live in NC). In my opinion it's worth the money.5
FabricSandraI bought this same sofa 10 years ago, I loved it and got so many compliments on it. Then I had to move out of state and couldn't take it with me so when it was time to buy it again a few years later IKEA changed the fabric to a cheaper version and the color isn't as nice. Very disappointing as I would love to buy this same sectional again.2
CoverMonicaI have had mine for a while and I love it. Can I buy the faux black leather cover separately?5
Black Faux Leather starts flaking after a whileAlvaroBought the black faux leather Friheten sofa a while ago and it started flaking. Leaves these tiny black plastic dots sticking to your skin. Awful! Of all the sofas in Ikea, they don't sell separate replacement covers. Stay away...1
Very nice (not real leather & very uncomfortable especially if you gain weight)JoshuaI had this sofa bed for a year & a half, it got uncomfortable within this time frame. Real leather sofa beds cost about $1500 so this sofa bed on Ikea is too pricey & I regret buying this sofa bed. I had to spend $500 for a mattress to put on top, I couldn’t sleep comfortably for months & eventually it got to the point where I couldn’t sleep a whole week. My back was hurting even more & I felt stiff & frustrated.2
Great product but polyester cover gets warm.KVery practical but can get warm in summer or for those sensitive to heat (wife). Product in cotton would be better but more expensive for sure.3
Great for small apartmentGinaWe purchased Friheten in the Hyllie dark charcoal tweed for our son’s first apartment at Uni. Its smaller dimensions dont overpower the space, it’s comfortable, supportive and stylish. My son is 6’6” almost 300# and his friends are big and tall as well and this sofa has held up to them nicely. We had it delivered and assembled using the Ikea assembly team which was essential to getting the bed mechanism right. Son now has room for guests to sleep, with storage for the extra linens. Ive slept on the bed when visiting and it’s surprisingly comfortable. Quick and easy to pull out and tuck away. After about 6 months, there was some pilling on the chaise seat, but I took a razor to it (you could use a sweater shaver, but i used my sons manscaper) and its good as new. My only complaint is i want to find 2 extra back cushions for the chaise side, but can only find the other fabrics (European site). IKEA, please make this option for the Hyllie fabric.4
Bed is really bad qualityOlgaWe bought this bed a year ago. The part where you pull out it literally fell apart you can’t even sleep on it. The couch is pure trash. 900$ down the drain after just one year! So sad.1
Could be betterHollyThe sectional is good for the price and comfortable. However, about 2-3 months of owning this sectional the sleeper frame broke due to using poor manufacturing (it cracked due to the wood being knotted)2

Material

What is coated fabric?

If you want a leather feel and an easy-care surface, coated fabric is a durable alternative – often at a lower price. We use fabric made of recycled polyester and have begun a transition from fossil-based to renewable material in the coating. Dimethylformamide (DMF) is a solvent that’s common in production, but since 2016 we’re instead using a water-based solvent.
