It is estimated that every five seconds, one BILLY bookcase is sold somewhere in the world. Pretty impressive considering we launched BILLY in 1979. It’s the booklovers choice that never goes out of style.

Glass shelfKATHYThe kallix version is slightly larger, and less expensive -disappointed in the cost but the product is terrific. It allows me to see what is at the top of the bookcase!4
Best bookcaseMindyWe have owned Billy bookcases for over 25 years! We have used them for organizing closets and toys in kids rooms, then moved them into dorm rooms. Most recently as a whole wall in my parents retirement home. Their depth makes them very versatile to use in narrow hallways and in closets. Billys are always a great storage solution.5
Nice to have extra shelves.ROSEAdded 2 of these shelves to the Billy shelf unit.5

It Is An Extra ShelfTropicalChromeIt is an extra shelf. It matches my white Billy bookcase. It fits well. It comes with pegs to hold it up. It holds up the items I put on it. I don't ask for more than that.5
Shorter than particleboard shelfExasperated by StoughtonThe vendor making each of these shelves FAR TOO SHORT. You can balance one between the bookcase’s pegs if you center it midway left-to-right, but it’s 1) UNSAFE and 2) extra-cheesy-looking. Especially if you try to emulate the fad du jour and fill the whole bookcase with glass shelves. (If you own more than onecase, you can always use extra particleboard shelves in the other: Ikea hack #1.) ... Most importantly, why should you have to worry about constantly re-centering shelves and making sure they’re pressed flush against the back shell of a Billy bookcase? One solid thump to case or shelf, and at least one of the shelves is apt to tilt off a peg or two, then pull loose at the side with the larger gap. At that point shelf and contents will plummet, if not toward someone’s foot — or worse, toward the unlucky child or pet from whose home these shelves should be banned. ... We’d bought two dozen of these doggone things, and my true love and I didn’t spot their “shortcomings” until we’d assembled the cases. The glass shelves stayed in their packaging until we’d aligned, leveled and shimmed four cases at their destination. Then, naively believing that Ikea USA would replace them with shelves that matched the extra particleboard version, we kept looking at, opening and measuring the shelves at each very sit we made to the store. We also kept discussing it with management and the Stoughton warehouse staff. To date nothing’s changed, so now we’ve got to rent a pickup, haul the cases down four flights of stairs, return them to the store, and replace them with the custom cases we finally commissioned out of frustration. ... By the way, I hope Ikea USA won’t resort to the same ploy they used with the glass-doors Hemnes display cabinet. Its wooden shelves were, likewise, manufactured too short for their span. And ditto: they were shipped that way, then sold for ages despite customers’ complaints and returns. Ikea actually ordered extra-long pegs shipped in from Sweden for everyone who’d bought the cabinet. Yes, assuming the vendors never “tweaked” their specs again in consequence, that more or less eliminated the risk of injury, collateral property damage, etc. But the moment anyone opened either of the cabinet’s doors, the piece looked like it belonged in a low-rent thrift1
Unbelievably expensive!NimrooIKEA sells this more than half of the price of the whole bookcase. Very unfairly expensive. Don't buy it.1
Make sure you grab an extra shelf!Jacey CThe rubber screws that are used to tighten the glass shelf can be ruined very easily. Just a bit too much force can make them unusable. These used to be just metal pins with rubber coating in the end. But Ikea changed for safety reason, I assume. These replacements are in very poor quality. Either grab an extra shelf for the pins, or you will need to find replacement at a hardware store.1
nice extra shelfpjimit comes with everything you need to add another shelf to your bookcase5
In stock and inexpensive.Portland OregonBought the Billy bookcase over five years ago and over several home moves lost the shelving. Really glad to find replacement shelves in stock and only $10 a piece.5
Love this shelf!Fort Worth GalThere are very few bookcases in the market-place that allow you the option of buying matching extra shelves to go in them. Ikea has given me this option that allowed me to customize all my Billy Bookcases (I have quite a few). I was able to buy several extra shelves and turned one of the Billies into an extensive jewelry storage tower. Finally I can access all my things easily and efficiently. Ikea just keeps making my life easier. Thanks Ikea!5
Color matches the original shelves.BillyfanI'm using the Billy to hold craft supplies. The extra shelf means I can have smaller (shorter) boxes to hold the supplies, which makes for easier retrieval of whatever I need.5
Very flatEec7569This was perhaps one of the best pieces of flat wood I ever purchased. The corners were nicely trimmed and the thickness of the wood was just right. I highly recommend this piece of flat wood. I only wish I had more places to put more of these pieces of flat wood. Assembly was easy and the instructions were clear and easy to understand. This piece of flat wood is working well and we are quite satisfied with it's performance.5
