No the sameAnonymous reviewerI noticed two different Billy bookcases and one was not in stock for white. So I ordered the new version. The quality is somewhat lacking. The back board is not as thick as in the older model and it has some type of tape to reinforce the creases for the backing. The creases are noticeable when assembled. It has texture to it too, not smooth like older model. When assembled its flimsy somehow, not sure if its because the backing is not as supportive as old version. Also, when sliding the backing in place it caves in allot. I also did not like the plastic nails things. I prefer the older version but its too much of a hassle to return. I'll probably cover the backing with some peel and stick wall paper and add some 1x2s to the back for extra support. I would defiantly not recommend the new version and hopefully they bring back the old version of the Billy. That one was perfect.

Bookcase works!JuneNice bookcase. Screws bleed through the wood when tightened. Shelving is held in place with a peg. Be careful the shelf can shift and land your items / books in the shelf below. I put mine inside of an empty closet in my home office. I also keep my printer and a small file cabinet in there.
Cheap plastic screwsSeanThe wood seems fine, but they use cheap plastic screws for the main assembly. These screws snap so easily it makes me feel like this thing is not gonna last long at all. And there are not extra parts in the bag so if one breaks you will need to call them or visit the store again to get more parts. I'm really surprised that they'd skimp out on using real metal for such small pieces.
Billy Bookcase Item #00477337 4x DefectiveIraDEFECTIVE from manufacturer 4X in 2 weeks: Please do not purchase this item. I tried 4 Billy bookcases ordered 2 at a time 2 weeks apart, ostensibly from 2 different IKEA warehouses and BOTH shipments totaling 4 Billy bookcases had this exact same issue: The side panel grooves that guide the entire backing panel are not cut evenly, nor are they cut lengthwise equally, therefore making the entire unit almost impossible to build and entirely impossible to trust it's stability at all.
+3 hours on the phone with 3 different customer service agents with conflicting answers to my question of where my Billy's were shipped from while only all agreeing on the negative when asked if they would escalate this to a supervisor ("No") as there are no such entities according to IKEA customer "service"), could anyone look at the units before they shipped? ("NO")
However, a resounding YES to accumulated lost time in my now stagnated project the Billy's were intended to finish. NOW: IKEA & I are DONE
Birch effect different Anonymous reviewerI have Billy bookcases in the birch veneer from more than ten years ago. When I purchased a new piece in the birch effect this year it clearly didn’t match. The new birch is whiter and cooler toned than the old one. Kinda disappointing the new piece won’t match the old ones. I also agree with other reviews that the shelves are not wide enough so they don’t fit flush against the outer frame.

Unbeatable priceSophieGot these to create a faux built in and they work perfectly for a fraction of what that would cost. They were out of stock forever but I couldn’t find anything even close to as inexpensive that didn’t look terrible. These don’t even look cheap, they look pretty nice! Happy I waited and used the remind me when back in stock service ikea provides.

BILLY bookcase has been a steady customer favorite for more than 40 years – but old faithful favorites also need to be updated to keep up with the times. We took a closer look at BILLY and came up with some ideas. One of them means more efficient use of materials, and another makes the bookcase easier to assemble and take apart.
“BILLY was introduced in 1979 and has helped millions of people to organize books and other things in the home. But the world has changed a lot since then, and even popular big-sellers need to adapt to new demands and ways of living,” says Umut Ates, one of our co-workers.
Paper means smarter use of raw materials

BILLY fits just as well in the living room as in other areas of the home – the office, dining room or library. It’s easy to expand and combine with other furniture. But one thing that has had potential for improvement is how the bookcase is assembled and taken apart. “Previously, you had to use about 50 small nails to get the back panel in place, but that’s history now. Instead, you snap on the back panel without any tools,” explains Umut. It also makes it easier to disassemble BILLY without damaging it if you move or want to resell your bookcase. “The improvements have made BILLY more adaptable – it can keep up changing life situations – and it wouldn’t surprise me if this storage hero is as popular in 40 years as it is today.”
