Miss the old pre-assembled unitWilliamWhile assembling this side unit is not as bad as some of the reviews, there is no room for mistakes. The old preassembled version was sturdier and better looking without the wooden studs peeking out. I would have paid a higher price for the older style

Too Difficult To AssembleClaireI have many many ikea products that I have had no trouble assembling: Kallax, Besta, Enhet, Nissafors, Aurdal…but trying to put the pegs into these rails is making me hate you with the fire of a thousand suns >:(
Seriously, Get Over the PegsTrevorYes, you have to assemble it. Yes, the pegs need a mallet to go in the hole. Yes, the hole (intentionally) doesn't line up. If this is a problem, consider that for $20-30 you are getting FSC-certified wood furniture made in a first-world country (my uprights were made in Sweden), packed without any excess plastics or other waste, that go together in about 5 minutes. I am not fit... I work in IT. Using the provided wood block (to reduce imprint on the soft pine), the dowels bang in nicely with a hard rubber mallet against the block. Easy peasy. Can you see the dowels? Sure. Is the wood finger-jointed? Sure. Is the price remarkable for the quality of the product you are getting with the first-world provenance and knowledge that it's environmentally sustainable? Yes, yes it is. Also - kudos to IKEA for not only making the packing as green as can be (again - no plastics beyond the rayon anti-tip strap) but by shrinking the footprint of the box the carbon footprint is lower too!

So much betterRobinI'm a potter who has been using the ivar system for my show display for over twenty years. These new uprights are the best ever. Over repeated set ups the old uprights would get loose in the joints and unstable. These new joints are so much studier.
I used wood glue on the joints and used a 5 pound mallet to tap them together. The whole thing took about five minutes. I made sure that everything was lined up and it only took a couple of taps. These are so strong when they are put together.
nothing fitsCandicedowels take the force of ten armies to fully insert that i gave up bc im scared my neighbors are gonna file a noise complaint against me + when it came time to attach it to the cabinet the holes were too small for the designated screws HOW IS IT SUPPOSED TO ATTACH? all the instructions make it look easy that im convinced i have a defective product
The worst ideaIrinaI hope you fired the employee who offered to optimize this part of IVAR. I couldn't put it together, pieces are not solid and don't fit in the holes. Looks like parts from different furniture that never meet together
Ivar FlexibilityDenaThe Ivar side unit is a comfortable height for managing book and magazine storage. It comes packed as a long slender box and was relatively easy to put together. The weight is quite light but the side unit is very sturdy.
Ivar2026EstherThe new IVAR comes in more compact packaging but requires more assembly. My pieces did not align perfectly, but I still could put the shelves together and load the shelves in my storage room. I like that I can take the shelf apart and connect it to existing ivars elsewhere in my house.
Easy Construction & SturdyAaronHaving these come disassembled is great because it makes staining or painting the parts much easier. Assembly takes about 3 minutes if you know how to use a hammer or any other blunt object. Start by aligning the slots at one and any work your way day gradually rather than trying to do them all at the same time.
IVAR is RUINEDAnonymous reviewerI read the reviews, I was prepared to put the side unit together. But the pieces are no longer solid pine. The uprights, the shelves, the cross bars on the uprights -- every piece is finger jointed every few inches. So there's no consistent grain, and it's visually very unappealing. I assume they did this because previous unassembled versions mentioned warped uprights. IKEA, please, go back to the original design, with pre-assembled side units! PLEASE!

Works just fine, assembly is no funHolgerLiked the pre-assembled version better since it was cheaper and you could see what you buy. At times the solid wood parts are not pretty, but there's no way noticing this when all is wrapper up.

I have LOVED my IVAR shelving system for years and years, and was so excited to move to a new space where I could add a little short Ivar that was going to be my bookshelf for cookbooks. That dream is dead because the side pieces are now IMPOSSIBLE TO ASSEMBLE. I'm the Ikea assembler in the house, there is no assembly that has beaten me to this date...UNTIL NOW. The dowels just do not go into the holes! And then you'd think they would manufacture the side pieces so you didn't have to see the dowl holes from one side but they give you two of the exact same pieces so one side of the post will always show your dowel holes, there is no hiding them. This was an awful change, Ikea. I'm going to be returning this purchase and i will need to dream up a new bookshelf idea (not from Ikea) for my cookbooks.
Doesn’t come assembled anymore :-(AmeliaThis used to come assembled when you bought it, but I purchased two more IVAR units to add to the one I already have, and was disappointed to learn that this portion no longer comes assembled. It was a real pain in the neck to put together and extremely loud to insert the wooden pegs.

I still like it, despite the changesMeI dunno, I didn't have as much trouble with this assembly as others seem to have had. Is it annoying that Ikea went the cheapo route and redesigned these? Yes, yes it is. But it's still a great design and versatile and good-looking, so I can live with it.
Faulty hole matchingAstorI've loved the IVAR series for almost a decade at this point. Specifically, I loved how easy it was to set up. With the new side units now needing to be assembled, this has gone sharply downhill. Not a single dowel hole matched when assembled, which meant I needed to redrill the dowel holes to match. Friction fit of the pieces was also too tight, with over half needing significant hammering. The dowels themselves are also unsightly and a downgrade from the old pre-assembled units. This is, quite frankly, unacceptable quality 'control'. I urge IKEA to either fix their issues or go back to selling these pre-assembled.
Wow. You have to assemble the side panels?LisaThis is incredibly disappointing. I guess 'll have to buy the shelves I want and stick with what I have. The price keeps going up and yet now you have to assemble the side panels yourself? Ikea, I hope you change your mind on this one.
